Why did you go into Internet marketing? Did you want the freedom of a business that you can do anywhere, one that doesn’t involve a 40 hour week and gives you more than 2 holidays a year that you spend the other 11 months saving for?
Now the odds are that, if you’re like 95% of other online Internet Marketers, you’ve made very little online so far – but even if you haven’t managed to make a profit yet, you understand the potential.
You’ve read about and maybe come into contact with marketers who have achieved the sort of financial freedom that you’re looking for – those who are making a fortune online and who live the way you want to live.
You’ve seen it; you know it’s possible!
But simply understanding how powerful internet marketing can be, doesn’t mean you’ll be one of the fortunate 5% who make a full time living from it.
But why do so many people fail to make it online?
Of course there are a myriad of get rich quick schemes that promise you millions of dollars while you sleep – anyone with half a brain (please don’t be offended – I’ve bought into them too!) will know in their hearts that if something seems too good to be true, then it probably is!
But, despite all the hype, there really are methods available to you, tried and tested by respected marketers that actually do work. They can give you the money and lifestyle you’ve always dreamed of.
Let me say that again – they can, absolutely, no doubt about it.
But what about your bit?
What about the hard work involved and the ability to stick at something when you’re not getting the results you hoped for.
What do you do when that happens?
You go onto the next shiny new product launch. You rush from one thing to another, constantly trying different methods but none of them work.
Why?
Because the simple fact of the matter is that you never put as much effort into any money making scheme as you did the first one. And the more schemes you try, the less effort you put in.
You start to expect failure. No matter how many times you tell yourself that this is the one method that will make you that elusive six figure income, you don’t really believe it.
So what is the key to being successful with your online business?
Well of course, the ideal scenario would be complete success with your first attempt, but let’s be realistic, how many internet marketers has that actually happened to?
Most of us have tried various schemes and failed (or at least not succeeded beyond our wildest dreams!!)
Think back to your first foray into the internet marketing world. Do you remember that feeling when you first had an inkling of the endless opportunities available to you to achieve financial freedom on the internet?
Remember your enthusiasm as you followed step by step instructions for building your first website, creating your Aweber account. Feverishly writing articles and Hemingway inspired email follow ups for a list that never materialised.
You gave your online business every bit of passion you were capable of – convinced that this was your ticket out of your humdrum existence.
No one was spared your enthusiasm – not your family, friends, work colleagues. Everyone you came into contact with knew that this was going to change your life and make you rich.
Did it work?
Did you make any sales at all?
Probably not!
And you most likely came to the conclusion that the method or strategy you bought into and followed so faithfully must have been rubbish.
So, on to the next one. You read all the hype, see the testimonials and you get cracking again.
However, this time, there’s a slight doubt in the back of your mind: What if this method doesn’t work? The first one didn’t. Should I put as much time and effort into this one? Am I wasting my time?
So, inevitably you don’t give quite the same amount of blood sweat and tears as you did into your first one.
And you fail again.
How many schemes and strategies do you follow before you lose all enthusiasm completely and focus only on the get rich quick schemes because you can’t muster up the energy needed to start from the beginning again.
If all this sounds depressingly familiar, I have something absolutely crucial to tell you.
It really isn’t your fault!
Of course it’s important to take responsibility for your actions but the reason that most internet marketers fail is not their fault.
In the beginning, when people first understand the actual potential of internet marketing, they get extremely excited and they work themselves to a standstill trying to build an online business.
But they fail – why?
When you first try your hand at internet marketing, you have all the enthusiasm in the world but you don’t have experience or knowledge.
You need almost constant help, but it’s impossible to learn everything you need to know about setting up an online business by watching a set of videos or reading an ebook.
Even the best ‘Make Money Online’ methods are not bullet proof.
Those marketers with more experience are able to recognise the weaknesses and adapt their strategies accordingly to make themselves an extremely good income.
Unfortunately, newbies have all the necessary enthusiasm but not nearly enough of the skills or experience to make the necessary tweaks and changes.
Being enthusiastic on its own is not enough for success online.
However, after your sixth failed attempt to start an online business, your enthusiasm is seriously waning but by God you know how to create an Aweber account, how to write a decent sales page and how to maximise your onsite SEO!
So why did your sixth attempt fail?
Because you lost your enthusiasm!
So to give yourself the best possible chance of success, you need both enthusiasm and experience.
Unfortunately experience can be learned or borrowed but when you’ve lost the enthusiasm, it can be very hard to rekindle.
But there are solutions.
If you have the experience but your fervour and passion has gone, then you need to work at bringing it back.
You know it’s possible to make a lot of money online. You’ve seen it done so many times.
You need to recreate that first ‘Oh my God’ moment.
There are a lot of respected Internet marketers out there – people to look up to who have achieved the success that you dream about. Reading motivational books and listening to MP3 recordings of people you respect and admire really can help.
But most of all, think back to what it was that got you into Internet Marketing in the first place. Was it thought of a new house; a new car; private education for your children; freedom to work wherever in the world that you want?
You need to remember the why.
If you’re a newbie and have all the passion and enthusiasm that we all had when first starting out, then you need to borrow or more likely buy the experience you need.
You need to get a mentor. One to one coaching. Time and time again you will hear and read of successful internet marketers putting their achievements down to their mentor or coach.
It will cost you but believe me it will be worth every penny.
You need someone to go through everything with you, and, if you’re prepared to work like a Trojan for a couple of months, you’ll gain the necessary experience to discover why something’s not working if it’s not, instead of focusing hours of your time trying to work out how to get your Aweber account to work properly.
Your mentor will be your experience.
Combine that experience with your enthusiasm and you will succeed.
Remember – you know that creating a successful and profitable online business is achievable and you really do owe it to yourself to give yourself the best possible chance of realizing your dream.
The majority of people don’t even get the chance.

I agree most of the marketers as per your post around 95% of marketers fail to achieve a significant earning from online business and I am one of them. I would rather say that I have failed so far, but I am sure will one day succeed in it. Learning with full motivation and passion for online business.

I think if we will not do mistakes then how life will teach us so we should accept our mistakes even in front of some persons or friends because it will prove beneficial for us . If we had accept our mistakes then we should learn from these mistakes and we will try to avoid do same mistake in future which gives to us different identity. And this habit will help to increase our confidence level.

I think it’s important to give yourself and your business some time to adjust in the online environment. Best would be that you’ll be able to support yourself in the mean time. As any other think, succeeding online requires patience and time. So, have faith and don’t give up until you’ve given it a try.
Hmm.. You have written it well.
Email Marketing certainly has its due share in the failure grid
You’re right that most people fail because they don’t have a mentor, someone who show them the direction. And we have to apply discipline to our enthusiasm. Have affirmation phrases to say it to yourself daily to remind your goal.

Absolutely great post Beverly. I agree that most of the time, failure is related to the amount of effort we put in. If we don’t put in any effort, then no scheme or method will ever work. You said and I quote “Because the simple fact of the matter is that you never put as much effort into any money making scheme as you did the first one. And the more schemes you try, the less effort you put in.”… nothing more to say

One reason some of the 95% fail is because too many people are trying to sell the same product. There are an awful lot of blogs out there that are trying to sell the Internet Marketing dream. It certainly would be nice if selling the IM dream paid off. But it doesn’t, 95% of the time. Maybe all that effort should be expended on selling things people actually use, like products we consume every day. Pursuing the IM dream and hoping it pays off is like buying a lot of lottery tickets.

When I was first starting out Beverley I wish I had run across information that you just shared in this post. So that I would have understood all that crap they were throwing at me.
Although a lot of times I did have that “this has got to be too good to be true” thought process going through my head, we’ve also heard time and time again that if you see it enough places than it has to be true. Which is why I was so torn and fell into those traps over and over again. I finally learned and stop buying all those products. I also learned that they are all stepping stones and pieces to the bigger picture.
I know this post will help so many others understand that it’s not their fault. Just don’t give up because this is an amazing place to be and you really can make some fabulous money here.

I’m really glad you found the post motivating – it was my main purpose for writing it and believe me, like so many others, I’ve been there, done that and most definitely got the t-shirt!
Enthusiasm is very difficult to sustain over long periods of time if success continues to elude you and that’s the point when so many people lose their way and get sucked in by the ‘get rich quick’ schemes.
I just revived my first internet venture. It didn’t go as well as I hoped originally, but in the meantime I put together a couple of sites which worked. I still believe in what I started out with, and armed with new knowledge, I gave it a try. It did work much better this time.
Hi Beverley,
It’s so critical to take responsibility for all that happens with your business, and life. Owning all victories – and failures – is crucial to your success, so you can cure the “blame bug.”
In the same respect, never beat yourself up over a perceived failure. I look at it this way: it’s an experience. I don’t get too worked up over my failures, or victories, or anything really. Every moment is simply an opportunity to work from. I intend to stay happy no matter what, never ever blame another person for my lot in life, and simply move forward from there.
Each perceived failure is a stepping stone, intended to move us higher.
Thanks for sharing your insight with us.

Fantastic reminder for anyone in any kind of business, Beverly. Getting a mentor is a great idea for anyone, even experienced entrepreneurs, but especially for newbies. And I love reading autobiographical books by extremely successful people, because they inevitably talk about how many failures they had before hitting the jackpot, no matter if they’re an athlete, business person or artist. We all stumble, fail, learn, and hopefully keep going so we can actually succeed!

I have no doubt that getting a mentor was the biggest break through for me – I really did have bags of enthusiasm but I needed the experience to go with it. As Easther commented- I’d never been taught how to market properly or how to brand myself
Starting an online business is hard work. Even if you have the best idea and intentions, you won’t find success overnight. It usually takes a lot of trial and error before you figure out what works. It’s important to stick with it.
Honestly, I wouldn’t say that a lack of enthusiasm is the issue – too much enthusiasm and too little follow-through has killed off probably as many internet businesses as anything else.
Instead, I think it’s about the little “cheats” people let themselves get away with. Think about people who start on a new diet plan – you say that you’re following everything 100%, but you’re not counting the “little” cookie you grabbed at the office party or the 2 glasses of soda you had instead of 1.
Internet marketing is the same way, but instead of cheating with food, we’re cheating with “Well, I’ll write that article tomorrow,” or “I’ll start doing guest posts for my site next week.” If you don’t have significant stakes motivating you to take action (like a job loss, etc), then it’s incredibly difficult to stay focused and actually do the work needed to succeed.

Hello Beverly,
These are things we should always remind ourselves about. It’s very unusual and highly unlikely to hit the nail on the head at the first time of asking. I’ve come to understand that it takes resilience to make any tangible income online.
A good number of people get on the blogging train to “change their lifestyle” – they believe blogging is all juice. Simply, It Is Not!
Have a lovely day!

I needed this..
And I’m only on my first site lol. I’ve dabbled with IM a lot in the past few years, maybe for about 2-3 weeks here and there. However this time I know it’s different.. I’ve taught myself to look at my behaviours and thought patterns which on a subconscious level used to make me stop so quickly.. I realised my main one is reading too much into a topic, and being so overwhelmed by the amount of ways there are to doing something eg generating backlinks, that I would never end up taking action.
The formula to success right now looks like:
Having a goal but not being outcome oriented/Enjoying the process + Always taking action + drip feeding yourself information + a mentor
Anyone want to add anything?

Hi.
Nice post. It is true that failure of online is not a fault that ever made by you. There may be many reasons behind of it that can be cause of your online business failure. I am not from the same field but I read in different articles that Google plays an important role in giving value and set ranking of your websites. So, how you can say that it is just because of your mismanagement either it can be the problem by updating of Google`s program that impact on your business.
