10 Traits of Successful Internet Entrepreneurs

Ask ten different people what they think an online entrepreneur is, and you’re likely to get at least ten different answers.

That’s because being a successful online entrepreneur is something that very few people will ever experience. Some think it’s merely starting your own business. Others think that a good online entrepreneur simply markets themselves or their businesses well online, and with a little help from Lady Luck, they find success.

Truth be told, any capable person who can get their business on the Internet can be classified as a web entrepreneur. However, there are certain traits and definable characteristics that set apart the true Internet successes from those who only have a fancy domain name.
What are they?

Here are ten of the most noted traits that successful online entrepreneurs exhibit that make them stand out, get noticed, and get emulated most frequently.

  1. Teachability
  2. Being teachable is highly important. They constantly seek knowledge about their field and aspire to learn everything possible about their industry. They constantly ask questions, seek mentors, and welcome instruction.

  3. Determination
  4. When there are dismal days, determination will see them through. Doing business online can be a roller-coaster. Determination keeps them grounded and instilled with a willingness to push forward to success.

  5. Focus
  6. It’s important to stay focused, both for yourself and your customers, when you are an online entrepreneur. Many web successes use online survey software extensively to gauge their customers’ needs and habits, allowing them to keep focused on important tasks.

  7. Experimentation
  8. They test formulas and methods continually to see what works. They’re not afraid to try something extraordinary.

  9. Ambition
  10. Their drive and ambition sets them apart from all others. When others give up, they persevere.

  11. Flexibility
  12. Part of what makes an entrepreneur successful is his or her ability to change and be flexible with whatever comes along. If a system isn’t working right, or a process needs to be tweaked, being flexible helps out tremendously.

  13. Innovative
  14. This includes coming up with new, bright ideas that appeal to the consumer. Innovation requires creativity, something that many successful entrepreneurs have naturally.

  15. Patience
  16. Success doesn’t happen overnight, but rather, only comes after several attempts at making something work. If they can have patience and endurance, they will be successful in the end.

  17. Frugality
  18. Being smart with their money and resources, and only spending what they need — avoiding a lot of unnecessarily costly resources — keeps them profitable.

  19. Self-Confidence
  20. Internet successes believes in themselves and their abilities to form a profitable online business. They outlast the naysayers continually.

A successful online entrepreneur may have one, two, or all ten of the traits on this list. The test is not determined by how many the person may have, but how the trait is used in a way that separates them from those who merely talk about success.

Online success as an entrepreneur is not in any formula or calculation, but rather, in hard work, perseverance, and an attitude that just won’t give up.
All of these things are what make the difference in experiencing actual success instead of just wishing for it.

This one is so important: “They constantly ask questions, seek mentors, and welcome instruction.”

I see a lot of people – both online and off, actually – who simply refuse to even consider the possibility that they are wrong, that another method might work better, or that something has changed in their marketplace. It’s critical when building a business to be able to see what’s working and what’s not, and to change you plans accordingly.

Of course, you also have to have the ability to stay focused and avoid jumping from one thing to the next, so it’s kind of a double-edged sword.

Thanks for the great list. Gives us something to think about!

Cindy, I was going to leave my own comment but you did such a wonderful job explaining exactly what I was thinking! If people don’t ask “why” or “how” than they can’t really grow as a business owner.

Ex. “How can I increase my exposure?”
Ex. “Why can’t I get a repeat sale?”
etc etc etc

Asking those questions let people get to the root of the problem. Once you’re there, you can truly begin to build a great business.

I agree- we need to be able to change and adapt. If we’re wrong, then we have to be able to admit it and move on. Something a lot of people lack :)

Very good list. It seems that so often people do not want to really take the effort to be successful online. While they think that being ambitious, teachable, flexible, and frugal (to just name a few) may be great concepts in the real world, they somehow come online thinking those things no longer apply. They want the quick and easy path to instant or near instant success. This will never happen.

Thanks for pointing out some really good (and very important) points that are essential to true success.

Hey Jennifer,

Thanks for the wonderful article!

These traits are all traits of successful people. I really can connect with number 10, because to be successful it’s firsts starts with the mindset you have. If you believe in yourself then chances are other people will too. If you don’t believe in yourself then people won’t believe in you. It’s really important to always have self confidence in everything you take on.

Just my 2 cents.

Thanks again!

God bless,

A successful entrepreneur must also have initiative. He or she has to make things happen while the others just think of ideas of what they could do if they would start something.

Also, like Murray said, an entrepreneur has to ask question about his business. “Why is my business not growing?” and ask them in such a way that it reaches a question from which he cannot ask more, thus find the root of the problems and solving it.
And of course this have to be added to your already written traits.

All the traits you mentioned are absolutely necessary to achieve any level of success. I would add one more to your list: “Action Taker”. Anyone who wants to be successful, must be an action taker. I see so many people fail as marketers because they don’t take action when necessary. The biggest reason for not taking action is, the fear of failure. It’s perfectly okay to make a few mistakes along the way…those mistakes can be one of the most effective learning tools.

Great points, but as for the self-confident, although believing in oneself is a good thing, but over-confident might not be such a good thing after all. I had seen a lot of entrepreneurs being over-confident and in the end cause certain stuff fail… so just be open-minded and accept everything and choose the one that really fits the confident part…

Jennifer – I agree with all of your traits of a successful online entrepreneur, especially your number 10 – “Self Confidence”. Without self confidence an online entrepreneur will second guess themselves, take longer to make decisions, and not having confidence in yourself will also make your determination /ambition suffer.

There is definitely a big difference between online success and wishing for it, and these traits definitely separate the successful from the people who wish for success. Great post and a great message.

Teachability and experimentation goes well because if we are open-minded we are eager to learn more and try new things. Taking risks and attempting to create something won’t hurt, if it does not work out then don’t continue. Right Pam? :)

Hey Jennifer,

These are great characteristics you are sharing here. I would add that they need to be persistent. It’s a bumpy road before you achieve success. All successful people had to overcome obstacles along the way before they got to where they are now.

If you’re not persistent, then you’d crumble and quit if you meet challenges in your business.

Thanks for sharing your insights, Jennifer.

All the best,
Mavis
