Welcome to my guest post series on YouTube. For the next couple of weeks, I will discuss the best tips for optimizing your YouTube videos, your channel page and increasing your video views using cross linking. I will also discuss using YouTube’s Insight feature to gain links and traffic for your blog.
Why Use YouTube?
It’s simple really. We should diversify our marketing efforts and capitalize on every social media platform we can. You Tube has some obscene number of subscribers and Internet Marketers are all over the place at YT. For myself, I have a completely separate project completely unrelated to Internet Marketing or blogging on YouTube. I have 2 channels and both are partner sites, so I have found some really useful tips to help newcomers to YT.
The quickest way to get started is with your blog. Read this article on how to turn articles into video in about 5 minutes. This will help you get going quickly. So, let’s assume you took my fantastic advice and created your first video. Good…..I like when you listen!
Tips To Optimize YouTube Video
These tips are pretty straight forward and do not require any special knowledge on your part about videos or processing or anything like that. Treat your videos as you do your blog. Here is what I mean:
1. Upload Frequently
- Uploading frequently is the best way to build views, subscribers and aid discovery
- It’s better to upload one video per day than seven videos every Monday
- Make videos that appeal to your niche audience
2. Video Quality
- Always Always upload the highest quality video available to you.
3. Titles, Tags and Descriptions
- Titles
- Think of your title as a headline
- If you want to include your brand name in the title, it should always go last
- Tags
- Be as detailed as possible
- Include: Brand, City, topics
- Descriptions
- Be as detailed as possible (short of offering the entire transcript)
- Include URLs (with http://) to the Channel, Playlist, or another site
- Character Limits
- Title: 120 characters
- Tags/Keywords: 120 characters
- Description: 5000 characters
4. Geo Tagging and Date Tagging
- Help your content get discovered in local or date-specific queries.
The Bottom Line
Everything we do as marketers should reflect our hard work and dedication to our craft. When creating unique content for YouTube videos, the same rules apply. Research your keywords and tags and use a catchy, keyword rich headline.
I hope this will help you in your efforts to optimize your YouTube videos and get you started on your video marketing endeavor.
Next week, increasing your video views by deep linking your videos. Now, what will your first video be about?
Feel free to share, RT and comment!

You have made me a jackie of all trades!!
And any chance to mention you is an honor to do so. I do have a soft spot for YT though since I actually got paid one time to do a college study based off of a video I did!! So, I went full throttle and learned a ton.
Have a good night my mad mad Russian and see you Sun!

Right on point Lisa! Great tips on optimizing your YouTube videos. These tips can also be used for other sites as well, such as Vimeo and Viddler. I love video; do it myself, but really need to do it a bit more often.
Great idea using Ana’s article as a reference; that is definitely an awesome post on how to quickly transform your blog posts to video to maximize your marketing efforts.
Thanks again.

Hi Michelle:
Yes, Ana nailed it with creating a video! Also, does Viddler have the same format as YouTube in regards to uploading videos and then adding title/tags/description and then share options? I have heard a lot about them as of late.
Have a great weekend,
Lisa

Hi Lisa,
They do. When you are upload a video, a box pops up requesting you to enter title, description and tags. Most video submissions site have a similar setup.

Wow, 2 partner sites… you are on a roll!
I’d love to be a partner. If I spent as much time creating videos as I do WATCHING videos, I’d probably be a partner! So, it’s one of my new year’s resolutions. Also, video-making is just so much fun, innovative, and something that people are willing to embrace. YouTube is the second largest search engine in the world!
Love these tips. I spend quite a bit of time optimizing my tags for keywords, and I want to aim to upload 1 video per week. Editing is a PAIN, but I’m willing to do it. Haha.
Never thought about the geo-tagging… how interesting! I live in Toronto, and when I went to a recent YouTube gathering in November, a local YouTube Facebook page was started for us Toronto YouTubers. I’ve already connected with a number of them, but now I see the potential in tagging for geographic locations.
Thanks for these great tips, Lisa! This is insanely useful for me.

Hey Lisa,
You’re right about those tips being easy to follow
I haven’t had much success with videos that I’ve uploaded in the past and I don’t have that many videos to upload on a regular basis. But will certainly apply those tips to my old and new ones and see if it works.
Looking forward to your next post!
Thanks bryan and I hope they help!
See you at the next one…

Great stuff. I have published some videos in the past and never did get the right amount of views I was hoping for. I have to admit that it is still outside of my comfort zone but tips like this do make it sound a “tad” easier and less frightening
Question? How do I include links to another site? Been trying to do it in the “annotation” section but can’t seem to make it work. Thanks
DiTesco@Making Money Online´s last [type] ..5 Reasons Your Blog Needs a Niche
Hi DiTesco:
Unfortunately, the only links you can place inside the annotations box are video or channel page links. I have tried everything to get “outside” YT websites in those boxes!
I will look more into before the next post and see if there are any changes.
Have a great week,
Lisa

Very nice tip, Lisa. Speaking about Youtube videos, I don’t really know whether links you leave in the description will count towards the number of backlinks in your blog?
