The Ultimate Guide to Blog Commenting For Traffic

The Ultimate Guide to Blog Commenting For Traffic

One of the best ways to get traffic to your website is by commenting on relevant blogs in your niche but since this is one of the best and most preached ways to get traffic to a blog it is being misused by so many people thereby leading to no results.

There are so many ways to get quality traffic fast to your blog and blog commenting is one of these ways. Even though I am an avid guest blogger, I once ran a poll on my blog asking readers how they found my blog, I included guest posting and some other methods as an option (I didn’t include blog commenting as an option) and I left the last field as “other”, thereby people can tell me other methods I didn’t include, I was surprised to see people telling me they found my blog through blog commenting – nobody voted guest posting!

I am someone who likes testing various ways to get traffic and results for my online business and I have gotten thousands of visitors to my blog through blog commenting. There are blogs that have sent me hundreds of visitors and some have sent me tens, all through blog commenting, this post will be explaining how I get the best from commenting on other people’s blog.

A Little Research on the Way

Before we get started, the first thing we are going to do is to find the top blogs in our niche. Even though many people will have arguments against this but this is what works for me, I have noticed I get over 30 visitors from each comments I make on SmartPassiveIncome if I am the one of the first three to comment whereas I find it difficult to get a single visitor from being the first to comment on some other blogs.

I will like you to know that there is nothing like overnight results and you will have to dedicate enough time to each blog to know what works and what doesn’t. For example, we all know that problogger is a top blog but I have never gotten much traffic from being the first to comment on problogger so that is why I am saying we need to research effectively and know what works.

In order to get the concept of this post, I will like to list some of the blogs I regard as the top blogs in the blogging niche.

  1. Problogger
  2. Copyblogger
  3. SmartPassiveIncome
  4. Viperchill
  5. Income Diary

It is very important to note that the fact that the above blogs are the top blogs and because you are able to comment on them is not a guarantee of getting traffic to your blog but if you could follow my advice in this post you will be amazed at how much traffic you can get from blog commenting.

Subscribe to The Top Blogs You Got

This is the main thing. One of the most important things to do when trying to comment on blogs for traffic is to know when these blogs are updated. There are many ways to know when these blogs are updated and one of the best ways to do this is by subscribing via email or feed.

The joy of getting high quality traffic from blog commenting is in being the first or one of the first three to comment, if you are not, you might still get traffic but the traffic won’t be as much as that of those who are the first to comment.

There are many drawbacks to subscribing to blogs via email when trying to comment on blogs for traffic and one of these drawbacks is that email to blog posts is not delivered immediately after the post is live but might take a long time to deliver, some bloggers email feed won’t deliver until the second day the blog post is live and before you know it the post would have been filled with comments thereby leading to a reduction in the type of traffic you can get.

I recently discovered one great solution which helps me be the first (or one of the first) to comment on many blogs once a blog post is live, you might have heard of this tool before but you most probably would have been taking it with levity. This great tool is called Comment Sniper. Comment sniper simplifies the process of being the first to comment on blogs once the content has been updated and it will notify you immediately there is a new post on a blog – this tool is so great and it is my main secret to being the first to comment on blogs, if you find me to be the second or third then this is a problem on my own path.

The Branding Effect

Even though blog commenting is so great for getting high quality traffic to your blog, I have noticed one problem and that problem is with not branding your comments.

When I mean branding your comments, it can come in many ways and one of them is that you must have a gravatar. The default gravatar that comes with wordpress has been overused and this will give you little to no traffic.

Another great thing besides having a gravatar is the quality of your avatar, it is very important to have a highly personalized avatar because this will make people more curios to know more about you thereby making them to click to your site. You can get started by getting your gravatar at en.gravatar.com.

Another great way to brand your comments is by having a fixed blog commenting style. For example, some people will go on commenting on blogs with names like “Web Design Company” today and “Software Company” tomorrow, this can never help you stand out because there are many web design companies out there but it will only make the issue worse because you will be seen as a spammer both by the blogger and his readers. If you would like to have the name of your blog or your keyword in your title then you can have it after your name in any of these formats “Onibalusi Bamidele | Young Entrepreneur Blog” or “Onibalusi Bamidele – Young Entrepreneur Blog”.

The Essentials

There are some very important things you must consider when trying to comment to build traffic to your blog, especially when commenting on an A-list blog. One of the most important things to consider when trying to build traffic through blog commenting is the quality of your comment; it will make no sense commenting about bananas when the author of the post is talking about oranges. Another type of comment you should try to avoid making as much as you are is the ones that says “Great post” etc.

One of the first steps to take when trying to get the best from your blog commenting efforts is to make sure you read the post thoroughly before you leave your comment, this is because you will have gotten insights into what the blogger is talking about, you will also gain a lot of knowledge and your comment will not just be pointless.

Sometimes, making reasonably long and controversial comments also brings about great results because many of the blogger’s readers will see you as someone who is knowledgeable about the subject thereby seeing your blog as a great resource or hub for learning more about the subject. It isn’t a must to intentionally be controversial because this can backfire but try your best to make sure your comment ads to the conversation going on.

Blog commenting is one of the best ways to get traffic to a blog and unlike many other traffic generation methods it also has some rules to follow if you want to get the best from it, above are some tips to help you get better results from your blog commenting efforts.

I would rather prefer commenting on blogs, getting less traffic than the mentioned ProBlogger for example. It is just that each post gets hundreds of comments and the chances to get a click is slim. Definitely being in the first few spots to comment is an important factor as well. I have made some research on few comments of mine – some in the middle of the comments section and others right after the article. The second type of comments are undoubtedly the ones that count.

Great post.

I have a done a lot of blogging in the past, and blog commenting was an excellent way to drive traffic. When I looked closely at my analytics I noticed that some of the smaller blogs were sending me the most traffic as well.

I also love the dual traffic/seo benefits of blog comments as well.

It is really important to leave a worthwhile comment and not just a comment that would look like spam.

Onibalusi, I hope I spell that correctly :D This is a well written post on commenting. I agree with you to a certain extent that blog commenting can help generate traffic more than guest blogging. I’ve guest blogged before but sometimes the traffic conversion that I hoped to get isn’t what I expect.

You also mentioned about the quality of comments which will also affect the way readers I think that is very true too. I find that more thoughtful comments esp those that expand and share some extra ideas are those that are the best ways to comment

Great post and quite interesting analysis. Aside from traffic from blog commenting, if the links are not nofollow they can actually help a site ranking in search engine but as you have said, its not an overnight deal, its does work if you know what you are doing and you do it correctly.

Hi Onibalusi,

I have always enjoyed ‘blog hopping’ not just because of the traffic element but because there is so much you can learn and so many relationships that can be built.

Totally agree about the style of comment, there are too many people who just say ‘great post’ and hope to get a tonne of traffic, providing quality and value is the key.

I must admit, I tend to comment on the ‘smaller’ blogs as opposed to the top 10, seem to get more traffic from them. I also look at how many posts the top commentators have got, another good way of getting your name ‘in lights’ so to speak.

Will certainly look up comment sniper.

Many thanks for the post

Simon

Hey Oni.

Great post as always mate – but I am daring to open a can here because I have a question I would love your feedback on.
What are your thoughts on the consistency of traffic resulting from blog comments.
Most backlink methods like web 2.0 for example will provide consistent traffic so long as you build links appropiately where as a blog comment will, as you say – give you 30 or so visitors and that’s it.Then you need to comment again for the next 30 etc etc

I think Blog commenting is effective, but only to a point – and you need to be sure to have a blog full of unique content yourself or its all wasted in the first place anyway.

Just my 2cents – thought I’d offer up some angle for you to digest :)

Being first commentator of a post definitely brings you some traffic but simply writing a comment not works i think because you don’t create any interest in a reader by comments like “Nice Post!”. So one should add some value in the comment related to the post which will attract reader to click on your link to know more about you or your blog.
