4 Steps to Successful Long Term Blogging

Aside from great fun and a hobby, blogging can be an effective way to share your points of view with a vast audience. The thousands of blogs created daily are a good proof to that statement.

Unfortunately not many bloggers achieve their goals. In most cases the reason are simple yet overlooked mistakes, which could easily be avoided. Check out the next paragraphs to see some of the more important components, contributing to a successful blog:

Remove the Word “Overnight” from Your Dictionary

That is the first thing you need to do before even thinking about starting a blog. You probably did read about all of those “great” products, claiming to make you thousands in 30 days on autopilot. In most cases they seem quite fishy and for a good reason – they just don’t work.

Things are similar when it comes to blogging. A questionable design and few articles you spun while chatting with your friend John are not going to do it. Yeah, I’ve seen a lot of experts (in their own words though) trying to do it that way. Those folks are a miserable failure honestly. So if you don’t want to be like them, you better turn on your long-term thinking.

Readers are the Lifeblood of Every Blog

Whether trying to monetize your blog by selling your latest eBook or offering the next revolutionary affiliate product, you need readers. It is a fact that loyal readers are in most cases the most regular commentators, retweeters and voters. So what does this has to do with monetization you’ll ask? A lot and the reason is simple – exactly those kinds of guys are the ones who can help you earn credibility. They are not much likely to buy a product on their own, but can give you (indirectly) a great helping hand on making others do it. Self-promotion is by far the worst marketing technique, whilst “making” others say a positive word or two can do miracles.

Content Without Promotion is Useless

If you are on the same wavelength with bloggers saying that ‘content is the king’, better think again. Yes, a blog without content is virtually not a blog. However a blog with content and bad marketing strategy doesn’t go much further as well. There’s no point in being a great writer and having an awesomely designed blog when the only one seeing it is… your friend John.

So now instead of wondering what a proper promotion is, go on Twitter, create an account, start tweeting and following people. The second thing you need to do is to start commenting on related blogs. Why not also write a guest post for your favorite blog? All of these are effective techniques. With enough persistence on your side they will help you build a name for yourself.

Easy to Navigate Layout is a Must

Disregarding the layout of your articles can have a big negative impact. The problem is time. It is all that matters for an information-hungry user. You need to put together your articles in such a way that they don’t require more than few seconds to scan through. That might not seem like too much, but can often prove enough to make a visitor leave.

Adding a heading to each of your paragraphs is the first thing to consider. Remember to add headings within an H3 or H2 tag (preferably the second). Using the bold (<b>) tag to emphasize the important sections of a post can also help readers find what they are looking for easier.

Your Turn

Let me hear your opinion on the above tips! Have you implemented them? If so do they make any difference? Share your tips to get people reading, subscribing, buying or whatever successful blogging means to you!

Hey Daniel,

I agreed with all your tips for long term success blogging. I think your most important advice is the one on “Content Without Promotion is Useless”. I think there a lot of blogs out there with good content but these blogs never get noticed because their marketing strategy is ineffective.

You revealed some great strategies for marketing a blog properly like guest posting, but you also need some persistence if you wish to promote your blog effectively. Thanks for sharing insights.

Absolutely right John! I stumbled upon a few top-notch blogs this week with great content. It was just out of pure luck if you ask me. It was obvious that these guys haven’t put a minute of work on their marketing strategy. I bet that if they did that in first place, they would be much more successful.

Thanks for stopping by mate! ;)

hi Daniel,
Thanks for the great article!
I thank God I did not believe in all those get rich quick schemes and overnight riches! I stuck to what I was doing and built a solid business which took two years or more to become even remotely successful. At the time I had my own real-life business and finally sold it about a year ago to earn a full-time living online. I am already earning more than I ever did, even when I worked seven days a week, 12 hours a day.

Hi Mitz,

You have defintiely achieved some awesome results there. People like you, earning enough to make a living just form their online business, are quite low on numbers. Wish you all the best on that!

Its funny reading your first tip Daniel, with me being first introduced to blogging after reading one of those product pages promising thousands of bucks by just spending 30 minutes every week writing a blog post! :D

Needless to say, I didn’t make thousands of bucks or anything, but blogging turned out fun in the end :D

Hey Amr,

I had gone through similar products back then when starting out with blogging as well. They are just plain ridiculous. Of course when you are new to blogging you don’t know that. That’s what the authors of these e-books, systems or whatever are counting on. As you said, you might not make much money, but at least it’s fun.

Thanks for the input!

Excellent Tips Daniel

I agree with you Content is King, but like you said if you cannot market your blog no one will ever see the content!

I have seen so many bloggers fail at marketing it’s UNREAL.

I think it’s important to establish WHY you are blogging too, ie. are you just blogging for fun or are you blogging to make SERIOUS money. Some people are happy to make a few bucks in adsense, whilst others want massive commission checks :)

Hi Alex,

No matter what the reason to blog, everyone wants people seeing his content. That’s the main purpose of blogging after all – to get in front of a huge audience. To succeed in doing so, you need to be good at marketing as you mentioned.

Thanks for the comment man! Take care! :)

Hi Daniel,
This is where it is not enough these days just to be a Blogger. We need to be marketers, entrepreneurs and bloggers all rolled into one. If you don’t have these 3 personalities then you won’t get to far.
Great article, real eye opener for some people.

Hey Pete,

Yeah, unfortunately that is how things are at the moment. Considering the competition is getting tougher by the minute, it probably isn’t going to get any easier. I’m seeing people that aren’t as good with writing as they are with promoting, but who have some really popular blogs at the same time. This clearly goes to show that promotion is a key component.

Thanks for commenting mate!

Hi Daniel,

These are really awesome tips for anyone who wants to build a successful blog. I know that they work since I have implemented them to put my name and blog out there.

Promoting your blog is a biggie, no one is going to find your blog if you don’t take action and let it be found.

Thanks for sharing these tips, Daniel.

All the best,

Suraj February 3, 2011 at 1:32 pm

Hi, Daniel

Thanks for sharing this wonderful article, particularly I liked the “Content without promotion is useless”. Previously I used to just post my articles thinking that people would just read my articles, but in fact after knowing more about blogging, I got to know Promotion is more important than posting articles.

Thanks for sharing these tips.

Daniel Sharkov February 3, 2011 at 3:49 pm

Hey Suraj,

I learned that statement is true the hard way – same as you did. You might have an awesome piece of advice, but unless you start promoting it, no one is going to see it. I hear some people saying that awesome content is the only ingredient needed for successful blogging, but let me tell you – that is totally wrong. Promotion in the form of Social media, SEO, blog commenting, guest posting is a must!

Hi,
Gr8 tips. Content without promotion is really a waste as you said. we do virtual office assistant services and we have started to promote our blog after reading this article. Thank you so much for guiding us and hope to get good results.

James M February 4, 2011 at 8:29 am

I feel as though my content is strong on my blog, but I was not doing nearly enough to market it to increase my readership. I’m setting a goal for 2011 to build on the subscriber base more than on the unique views or page views. I have small goals for June to reach 50 subscribers, and then 150 for the end of the year. Of course, i want to break through those marks if at all possible.

To really succeed in blogging, you have to be dedicated and passionate about your writings.

Alex February 4, 2011 at 12:50 pm

Hey Daniel,

You are spot on with this one. No blog will be an overnight success and not matter what kind of ebooks you are buying you wont get there. If you want a successful blog you need years to gain credibility, readers and the status of expert.

All this will help you later on, when you can start to really marketing your blog.

Like you said, even if you write Pulitzer award wining content, but no one knows about it, it’s just like you never wrote it. In blogging is all about connecting with other and interacting to create strong connections. All this will later on transform into a automated promotion process, with people tweeting, sharing and bringing new visitors.

Lol, I love your point about content without promotion is useless, Daniel. But remember, sometimes you can write a content will automatically get traffic for you.

I often see smart people aim for buzz content, like content about Super Bowl which is going to happen in near future. So, there’s some exceptions there :)

Nathan February 6, 2011 at 11:44 am

Great article! I started online recentley with these get rich quick ideas. I look at it this way, the money I paid I’m getting back in education. I’m learning a lot, maybe the money will come later.

About marketing, I have a few websites selling products. They were pre-built so I have no control over content. So I started a blog in part to ask those customers to comment or wright a review of the product they purchased. Free advertising.

Keep on writing, some of us have a lot to learn.

Sathish February 7, 2011 at 10:32 am

Hi Daniel,

“Content without Promotion” is the best of all these tips. Even if you write tons of quality information, it won’t reach out to the internet public without any kinda promotion. So along with writing contents, you should make a habit of promoting them.

Throw overnight out of your vocabulary. I couldn’t agree with you more, Daniel.

I find myself repeating this a lot lately, but I think it’s one of those messages that bloggers need to keep hearing. The #1 key to being a successful blogger is persistence. It trumps everything else because so many bloggers simply give up way too early thinking they gave blogging a real shot.

I’m amazed how someone at an age where I was impatient for everything is so wise when it comes to taking a long-term view. Keep up the great work Daniel.

Hi Daniel. I like your first and third points. I like the word “overnight” you used. It is foolish to think that overnight a new blog will start churning out gold. Content without promotion is useless similar to a good product without the right marketing technique. Both will not not yield although good. Well written article.

I have also felt that great content with no promotion stays useless for a long time. Even bad content gets good traffic just by aggressive promotion. Spending a little time for promotion is always better.
