If there’s anything that we, as serious bloggers, want are the big three goals: More branding, more traffic and more money. One of the hardships of trying to achieve all three has not just been creating great content but finding a healthy balance between promotion and the ability to generate income. What if all of these elements could be accomplished on one fell swoop?
Question: Why would you want to repurpose content?
A lot of people understand the process of writing a blog post, publishing it, promoting and following-up with comments – this is basic. Yes, just publishing content will gain you traffic, revenue and branding but you’re really missing out on a lot of opportunity to maximize each of the potentials.
Common misconception around the web is that there is a duplicate content penalty – hint: it’s not when it’s published on other sites; only yours. Just look at any time a news article goes out from the Associated Press – rarely is it changed but it still appears across the web; this goes the same for your content as long as you’re not republishing the same post over and over again.
So what am I getting at, eh? Repurposing your content allows you to reuse your content in many different ways from building backlinks, publishing posts to paid-to-write article sites, creating an information product and much more.
Develop this mindset first
You know all those pro bloggers, marketing and internet savvy people you look up to? Most of them repurpose their content to the point that what you’re receiving on the blog end is merely content published a while back for paid members.
Don’t believe me? Just look around and you’ll see it everywhere:
- A webinar that was for members only now freely available on a blog
- A piece of software just for the list but is accessible for everyone
- A report into a new traffic technique which was originally developed through a newsletter
- A major ebook taken from the pages of preexisting content, repackaged and sold
I know those are starting to sound familiar; you can do this too. Just think of each of those posts you wrote a while back that may not have received a lot of attention – what about those posts that regularly get hits? As new people come to your blog they may not have yet discovered this content – why not make it available to them in a completely new format that rocks their socks off?
7 Ideas for repurposing your existing content
I wanted to get the first two sections out of the way because I always feel it important to introduce and develop the mindset of what you would like to accomplish (if you’re serious about doing tutorials you read on the web, mindsets are what will help you the most (in my opinion)).
So, without further adue, here are 10 ways you can repurpose your existing content to help drive traffic, build a brand and make some additional money.
Create an eBook – Many people have a hard time writing thier ebook (I’m certainly one of them) because they are unsure of what to write about. Sitting on your blog are hundreds, if not thousands, of ideas waiting to be formed into an ebook that could be used for list-building or as a sale. Take your most popular post and turn it into a short white paper for list building or turn a post series into an entire ebook which you could sell around the web.
Convert posts to video – What if, for less than $100, you could double your content in a few days and potentially make even more money from it while building a brand? If you’re not afraid to jump on camera you could begin to gain all of this post’s benefits from converting existing content into video. Using a simple HD camera, go over each of the post subjects; likewise, you could always shoot screencasts if it were related to technical items – upload it to Youtube, place your link, brand your video and boom! you’ve got yourself some great repurposed content that’s working for you.
Convert a post to podcast or audio product – since you already have the script laying in front of you, why not go ahead and put it into audio? Don’t have the best voice? No-one will judge you but if you’re still reluctant you could always hire voice over talent. Turn your old posts into new podcasts or even create an audio course you could use for opt-ins or even for sale.
Use it for backlinks – Now that you have a post completed and it’s matured on your blog, go ahead and break it down into smaller parts and republish it on article directories to build backlinks to your blog. You’ve already gained the rankings that you need for your post so you might as well give it another life through individual articles.
Sell it – if your post over really well, what about selling it? Sure, other websites may not want to purchase it (although it’s possible) but what I’m talking about is taking it to a physical publication – find a niche magazine in your field and hand it over to them for a profit.
Use it as a hand-out – if you’re giving a lecture about your niche in front of an audience, you could use your blog posts as small hand-outs to the attendees. Not only are you adding additional value to your speech but you could even charge for the more extensive posts – if these people don’t have the time or effort to visit your blog, why not supply it to them in physical form – that’s smart.
Create an infographic – if your post touched on really hot topics with plenty of facts you could turn it into an infographic. Right now, infographics are spreading like wildfire on social media networks – take advantage of your existing content by repurposing it with a design flare; it could score you some great traffic!
These are but several ways you could repurpose your content, use your imagination and it could be endless possibilities.
Final Thoughts
Within this post, you learned more than a few ways you can repurpose your content for traffic, branding and profits. The most difficult hurdle is to get over this mindset that your content has to stick to one format – this is the web, it’s multimedia; take advantage of it!
Maybe next time you hit publish, you’ll have a few more ideas than just promoting it next time – now that you’re armed with this knowledge, what’s stopping you from dominating the web?

All powerful tips Murray. Getting the mindset down was a big block for me. I wanted to create new content each time I sat down to write or film a video………until I realized the 100′s of millions of dollars that is the “Chicken Soup” series of books by Jack Canfield has their origin in a bunch of repurposed articles. Woke me up
Then I started doing it too.
Thanks for sharing!

I mean, we definitely need to pour a lot of our energy into creating value for our community but we have to also realize that there is a ton of opportunity to take what we’ve done and get the maximum amount of benefit from it all.
If we think of our blog as a business than we see our posts as products. A real business would make sure that their product has every opportunity to reach the market so rather than restrict it to a single medium – get it everywhere!

Hi Murray,
You’re very correct here that duplicate content only penalized when they used in your own pages not on other sites.
I think the best way to use your existing content is by Converting posts to videos as videos are easy to express your experience and way of doing something plus it saves valuable time of the readers.
Definitely Sam!
And the cool thing about if you take your post and make a video is that you can later add to it on all the little things that you may have missed while writing it. You can cram a lot more information in there because you’re speaking rather than trying to get people to read large blocks of texts.
Great idea that of uploading content on you tube and posting your link! There is almost no day without me receiving on my e-mail or on my facebook page of a youtube link from my friends (with more o less interesting videos), but, as curiosity is in the human nature, I alway open and watch them. So this is a good tip for bloggers..
Thanks,
Anna

On top of that, if you build a subscriber base like you do your blog you will usually pick up a lot of views as soon as you publish your video. People will see it when they land on Youtube and viola! you’ve got yourself a hot video
Hello Murray,
Great tips like always, I wonder if written publication can take an article from a blogger and publish it, I never heard of something like that happen. But this makes me think of something else, if your blog is overly popular and you think you have great content you can print some of your article and sell them as a fully fledged book or even magazine.

I could definitely see it happening Alex because there have been multiple bloggers that have taken their blog and formed them into books so it’s probably very possible. In fact, we, bloggers, probably write content good enough to be published.
One of my own goals, on day, is to have an article published in Wired. I think I may be able to do it one day either through recognition or just from learning as I go what works; eventually pitch them on an article
Always go for the gold, ya know? There’s a TON of additional platforms that we can tap into because we’re able to create content.
Murray, my man, a great reminder to people of the power of repurposing existing content. It is yours. Make use of it! Right. There are also (as I know you know) ways to repurpose them on sites that allow duplicate content, get back-links from these sites, drive direct and organic traffic through the links AND get a share (likely very small, honestly) Bukisa, Assc. Content (that I know you know!) Shetoldme, best reviewer, infopirate just to name a few.
Anyway awesome post. I hope you PLR site is kicking ass.

Murray, aloha. Thx for a very helpful post; I especially liked the explanation of duplicate content. Being a newbie to the world of blogging, I have read many contradictory statements on this. What you say is clear and makes sense. Mystery solved; mahalo.
You are so right on converting to video, Murray. Having down that with a few posts, I was amazed to see how quickly the videos moved up the charts. Next, I am going to start podcasts. Doing those two is such an easy way to repurpose.
Though I used to submit articles to eZine, I stopped after the Google farmer Panda update. Having read your comments on building backlinks, I will get busy again.
Your post, Murray, was very beneficial for me. Thx so much. Have a great weekend. Aloha. Janet

That’s awesome that you’re thinking about doing the podcasts. Dig back through your analytics and find your best posts – turn them into some audio and bam! You’ve got yourself a TON of great spoken content right then and there.
The Panda update is actually quite awesome for us that strive to create great content. Less people creating crap content that outranks our good stuff because of hardcore SEO; it’s the end of the vapid content – we’re the winners in the end
use it on ebook
that’s clever
i will try it

The cool thing about converting the content into video is that you could easily use Camtasia plus Powerpoint to make them
There’s even a plugin in Camtasia that lets you do this so once you add a voice over you’ve got yourself a video – voila!
I’ve always made a conscious decision to use my content as often as possible but still you have managed to give me at least 5 new ideas of how best to go about it.
Great post, thanks Murray

Excellent ideas…I really do need to start going back to older articles and repurposing them into video and audio! Very easy to do and gives you more syndication across the web on different platforms other than your own blog!

Hi Murray,
These are excellent tips. But when splitting up the post into small components and posting them elsewhere, or for using the articles for article marketing, rewriting them is vital.
But as you say, repurposing content is a great way to market your blog.
Cheers,
Jane.
Most certainly Jane. Failure to rewrite them is a huge mistake because you don’t want to pull away from the original article. The good thing is since you already have that information down on the screen you can easily work back through it to make sure it’s unique
Good thoughts. I would like to write an ebook also, but the plan has been postponed for ages! Anyway, your post is really inspirational, and so I think I will re-start my ebook project.

Just work on your book as it were just a collection of blog posts. Just write one new one a day and in a month you will have more than enough content for the book
Great tips Murray.
It’s important to remember, especially with recent updates from Google that re-purposing and duplicating are not the same thing. I haven’t done much re-purposing (yet) and your post is a timely reminder for me of the simple wisdom of leveraging your own efforts…

The overall point isn’t to just blast the content everywhere; it’s to put it into other mediums which will let people find your brand
Everyone learns through different platforms so rather than forcing people to read a post – give them video, audio and more! You’ll get through to people with your best content in no time at all.

I believe another way to repurpose the content of your blog is to create a new post and then, use it as guest post. One guest post is much more valuable than 100 spun content to submit to article directories because you have backlinks on the top of your content, not at the bottom and that’s a huge distinction right there. What do you think?
