Everyone knows about Twitter, it is a household term nowadays…
Millions of people around the world, from all walks of life, are fascinated by twitter and use it regularly.
From documenting daily activities to keeping in touch with friends, this popular instant messaging system has really changed the way we communicate with each other.
For bloggers, the importance of twitter is immense. Twitter helps you bloggers to showcase your own personality, create our own unique profile and build a network of people in your niche. This collectively helps you drive traffic to your site. When used effectively, twitter can be an awesome tool to promote your blog or a website around the web.
How can you benefit using Twitter?
The way to use twitter for your site’s benefit is little different than regular tweeting. Simply signing up to the twitter account and writing everything you do daily is not the best way to help your blog. Tweeting can be very beneficial if you have objectives and you are focused on achieving those objectives.
If you stay disciplined in using twitter for your site, you can accomplish the objectives you want to achieve, a lot faster. So, it is best to write down what you want to achieve with your tweets. And while tweeting follow these objectives. Of course, you can mix things up a little by tweeting outside of your objectives, like about your daily activities or something cool happening on the web. But, it is important not to stray too much off the track.
With so many people tweeting, how can you be heard?
It is necessary to stand out from the crowd in order to be heard. Originality and usefulness add value to your tweets and help you get noticed. If your tweets are useful and unique, they are more likely to be read by people. This grabs the attention of the people who follow them and in turn you get more followers.
Just as every blog post or an article counts, it is important to know that every tweet counts. So be careful about what you tweet or else it can hurt your reputation as well as the reputation of your blog, website or your brand.
How to use Twitter effectively?
Basically, there are 2 ways you can use twitter. One way is to tweet something that you are thinking, ask a question, share an idea, suggestions or link to a good post. The other way is to reply to somebody’s tweet or your own tweets.
To reap all the benefits of using twitter, both these ways have to be used proportionately. If you do not reply enough then you are going to miss out on the interaction and if you reply too much then you will just blend in with the crowd. The secret is to participate in the conversation using both ways proportionately so that you can stand out in the tweeting community.
Ask a question: Asking a question is one of the very effective ways of using twitter. It is easier to draw the readers attention and initiate a conversation with a question. It helps to build followers and create a community real fast with questions.
Questions also help you get the conversation going. You can also tweet the result of the question, how many people answered, what was the answer and so on. However, be careful not to ask questions all the time. It gets monotonous and your readers will lose interest on your tweets. Just use them frequently to mix things up.
It is a good idea to use direct messages to talk to an individual after the the third or the fourth time if the topic does not attract wider audience.
Don’t be selfish: I have seen many twitter users just tweeting about themselves or their business. This can be boring to the followers after a while. One of the very important aspects of using twitter to promote yourself, your blog or a website is sharing other people’s work as well. Tweeting about other people’s tweets, blogs or website along with your own blog, website or business will spice things up.
Plus, linking to high quality blogs or websites and tweeting about them is a way to show that you are not too self-centered. This is a very good habit to follow and is going to help you a lot in the long run.
Tweet regularly: Many twitter users think that the more they tweet, the more likely they are going to be heard. Of course, this is true to some extent. But, you don’t have to tweet every hour of every day. The whole idea is to tweet less but do it more effectively.
Using twitter routinely for about 15 minutes every day or every other day effectively, helps you be more productive without having to spend a lot of time tweeting. And the most effective way is to start a conversation and connect with people that interests you. This is a great way to meet different people in different niches, share ideas and learn from others.
Customize and Promote your twitter profile: Choosing a unique profile page and an avatar that best describes your blog, website or brand is just as important to stand out in the twitter community. Just like you promote your blog in various places around the web, you also need to promote your twitter profile and your tweets. The best places to promote your tweets is in your blog, website or in Facebook.
Use different Twitter tools: There are many tools available for you to make your twitter experience easier and fun. I am a great fan of the desktop twitter client twhirl. It makes the whole tweeting experience real easy for me. Use tools like these and find out what works best for you.

Hi Adam,
I like your tips.
Tweeting consistently, RTing, engaging and throwing in some non-business related tweets is the recipe to my twitter success. As I RT and engage frequently my following grows.
Thanks for sharing your insight.

Woohoo Adam!
Normally I’m a big fan of Twitter in terms of marketing. I started of tweeting most of my blog posts then found that there were others I wanted to share with my followers and finally to really build relationships. The right way kind has grown on me through trial and error.
For most it may be the same as it’s an evolving process much like blogging is. They don’t call it a micro-blogging platform for nothing though. Congrats on your first guest post and looking forward to more like these in the future!
Talk to you soon!

Hey Thu,
I definitely agree with you. Tweeting effectively sure is an evolving process just like blogging.
Trial and error is the way we can all learn how to do things effectively and find out what really works for us. Promoting blogs using twitter or other social media outlets is no exception.
Thank you Thu for dropping by and leaving your valuable thoughts. Really appreciate it.
Adam,
Great post on the power of tweeting. Tweeting must be in the air as that was my topic today too. Great minds think alike, huh.
Anyhow I liked you article and absolutely agree with what you say.
Anyone who does not use Twitter at all and has an online presence should start. It is a very effective way to spread your message. As inneffective as I fell I am with twitter sometimes (it is hard to be personal when traveling and not having cell access) I still manage to get a decent amount of traffic.
And i know it could even be better if I were more personal.

One thing I now do is acknowledge on Twitter when someone has recommended a good post once I have read it. Also if someone RT one of my posts I don’t just say thanks for RT I try and write a message as well. I also unfollow spammers! I am finding Twitter a great place to interact but it only works if it is two-way conversation. I think people appreciate when you take the time to comment on a post they have written. Everyone likes encouragement. And yes I ask lots of techie questions and I get lots of helpful answers from my followers.

Hey there,
Whether you have a blog or a website, twitter is a great marketing tool. Like Steve mentioned above, if you are not already using the power of twitter effectively, you are missing out on getting your voice heard, building your brand and traffic to your site.

Hi Adam:
Wow I am learning a lot about Twitter. I read Steve’s post yesterday and today when I came to your site, I found yours here. Twitter, I learned by trial and error.
Your post gives me an idea how to manage tweets of the day. Depending on the amount of tweets I am going to write in a day. I can always divide them into three sections, one for promoting myself, second promoting my friends at twitter, and creating new relation ships. This way I will be able to continue using it as a promotional site. Giving my friends a fare share of interaction.
You have described it in a very professional manner.
Thanks for a informative blog

Hey Adam,
Great post. I agree with all of your points especially about not making it all about yourself. It’s important to mix it up every now and then and tweet about other people. What I do is ReTweet blog posts I find helpful, quotes and any other useful tweets from people I follow. My new blog posts automatically get tweeted, and every now and then I’ll make my own posts, but for the most part my tweets are about other people.
In any case, the thing to realize is that it’s all about providing value for your followers. Provide them with useful and helpful content, even if it’s in just 140 characters or less.

Hi Adam, that’s a great reminder to mix it up. I never think to ask questions myself although I do regularly answer them. I definitely hear you about selfishness – I can think of a couple people I follow who rarely talk about others’ work. I also agree that personalizing things is key – I try to add my own thoughts about stuff I RT.
Great post Adam.
Twitter accounts for the second largest traffic source for me month in and month out, so it is definitely something that should not be taken lightly.
You outline a good process here – not too overwhelming, and yet something that I can say first hand – actually works!

All say that Twitter is extremely good for getting targeted traffic, but i don’t why i don’t get much traffic from there. I usually get only 20-30 users everyday from Twitter which is not a good number i think.

Adam,
Great info. Twitter is my 2nd largest driver of traffic to my website. However, I’m conflicted on how often to use it. I’ve been experimenting sending links to my last 3 posts about 4X per day during every 3 hours overnight. I’ve always gotten a lot of hits when I do it but I know I’ve ticked a couple of people off. Is this the best strategy and is losing a handful of people simply “part of doing business”. Your thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Brian
Brian, appreciate your comments here.
I really like your approach. As long as the system works for you so that you can maximize the potential of twitter without hurting your reputation too much; you are going to be fine. You know, you can’t please everybody no matter what you do so I believe it is best not to worry about handful of people that get ticked off. Now if more than handful start getting ticked off then you might have to find another approach.
My suggestion would be to mix things up a little – 34% tweets about your post; 33% tweeting other people’s work, 33 % your personal stuffs which may be significant, interesting and informative to your followers that has nothing to do with blog posts.
I would also suggest you to tweet in block of 4-6 so that your tweets just don’t disappear among the vast sea of tweets.
I hope that helps.

Hi Adam, to be honest, I am a newbie to Twitter although I had an account in there for two years. I used Twitter as an automate blog promotion tool but it didn’t provide me any results. So I have started learning on how to use twitter effectively and I am spending sometime there. These days, i am getting a decent amount of traffic because of my efforts.
Being selfish and promoting just your own articles won’t help you in any way when you are in twitter. You need to be yourself and retweet good articles to create a reputation for yourself. IMO, that’s the right way to use it.
