My Blog Suspended for Hours

by Devesh on June 22, 2010 · 50 comments

Hello Everyone, 21 June,10 was a very sad day for me, a very sad one indeed. Why? because my my blog suspended for hours. Yesterday i saw my hostgator account got suspended because of high server load and the same time my net stopped working (what a.. bad luck).

Hostgator – One of the most Reliable Hosting I have ever seen, they are very reliable.

What now happened?

The problem was of high server load. Today i come to know Yet another related posts plugin causing the high server load. I just removed the yet another related posts plugin. Now i’m using wp related posts plugin. I’m also using W3 Total cache and clean options plugin to reduce the server load.

To You !

Many of my readers also experience this problem because they couldn’t get access to one of the best blogs for a very long period of time. Now everything is fine.

A very big thanks to all my readers for the support :) .

Glad to know things are okay now, Dev. That’s a lot of trouble to be caused from a plug in, and a pretty popular one at that. Good to know things are working okay with the changes though.

Hi Dev, I remember chatting with you last night while your site was still down, before you found out what was causing the high server load.

Thankfully you found out what it was! And I am also using ‘Yet Another Related Posts’ plugin so I’ll definitely have to disable that one and use something else… thanks so much for sharing this, you saved my site :)

I’m glad you got your site back up and it wasn’t down for TOO long.

Hey Jonathan,

Thanks.

Hostgator team said 99.999% of the time the YARPP is the culprit.

Now i’m using WP Related Posts Plugin and I’ve also changed the contact form because contact form 7 found to be vulnerable.

Thanks for the support Jonathan. I really appreciate it.

You’re back baby! And that’s all that matters man!
Sucky but at least you did not lose everything.
I was lucky enough to run into Joella aka Blog Angel and she directed me to the cache plug in you talk about. Probably saved me.
Stay awesome! :)

LOL. Glad your blog is alright now! :-)

You are way luckier than me because last time, my former host “accidentally” deleted my blog, which is even scarier and sadder! I wrote about it here:

http://www.glosonblog.com/my-former-blog-host-accidentally-deleted-my-blog-and-how-i-fixed-it/

After that, I decided to switch to HostGator. And indeed, they are very reliable. I really like their support and live chat. :-)

Plug-ins are a great thing, as they can add functionality to a blog, but unfortunately those are not always bug free and can cause serious problems. Lately my blog started to go so slow and it took me days to find that it was because of a recently added plug-in. It is nice that you’re back online. Looking forward to interesting articles!

Between, what plan that you’re using right now? I thought Baby plan has unlimited bandwidth and disk space, then you might not facing the problem such as high server load?

It was bad to hear that your blog underwent a downtime for so long. I think Hostgator is behaving odd nowadays. Even though I do not use Hostgator, I have heard many people complaining. Good to hear that you found out the root cause of the error. I too use YARPP and I am confused as to disable it or not.

Angela July 23, 2010 at 10:56 am

I have had many website woes recently.

Firstly, I couldn’t get my emails. I use one of my domains for all my emails, it was the first domain I set up and I kind of just kept using it for email… there was no reason to change that. Then one day, they stopped. So I checked, first thing you always check, ‘did I pay my bill?’ Yes. Next, ‘can I load my site?’ No. Next, ‘can I load my host’s site?’ NO!!

It took 4 weeks to resolve that, my host had gone out of business and I had to get hold of the domain registrar and prove who I am and get my emails moved over. I also lost my domain then – and (2 months on) haven’t managed to get round to rebuilding it.

Two weeks after that (while I still didn’t have emails), my main income-generating website died. It wasn’t there any more. Usual checks: paid bill/Yes, site up/No, host site up/Yes. It turns out the host had been bought by another company and they had (unsuccessfully) migrated my website. It was down nearly 3 weeks, the end of this meant I had to move my site to a new host… hopefully an improved host.

So I moved hosts – and thought everything was going to be fine – until I went to send out my first newsletter. I had to make some changes to the smtp server information, then sent out the newsletter. BIG PROBLEMS…. my site was “site unavailable”… here I was mailing ’000s of people to say “come to my site” – and it was down! That one turned out to be the volume of mails I was sending out, apparently there was a limit, but the host had not controlled the limit. I think most of them ended up marked as spam, I only got 400 hits on my website.

So, I wasn’t doing very well. Then last night, I went to see how many new members I have – 0. 0 is an impossibility. I get 25 new members every day, always have, always will…. so I investigated – and registered myself. The system was not sending out emails, the emails contained a verification code too. So I contacted the host and they have said it’s fixed now… only time will tell.

But there’s another problem, my site needs an upgrade. So now I have authorised the host to make the upgrade – and I am sitting here with fingers crossed, hoping it will all go OK today.

This has taken me about 6 weeks in all. None of it was expected. But we get through these times don’t we.
