Comments on a blog indicate the level of interaction a blog has with its readers and are very important in determining the loyalty of visitors and readers. Don’t you hate it when you have written a blog post and no one comments on it? Technshare is just over 3 months old and yet I have many posts at my blog with comments numbering over 20-50 comments on a single article.

12 Ways to Increase Comments on your Blog

#1. Give a Dofollow link – Give your readers some page rank by providing ‘dofollow’ links on your comments. This method is explained in detail in one of my posts on Why I stopped using nofollow tag!.

#2. Use CommentLuv Plugin – You can advertise their most recent articles from their blogs with the WordPress CommentLuv plugin.

#3. Don’t forget to say thanks – One of the Best 16 WordPress Plugins For 2010, Comment Relish helps with this. Another way is to redirect them to a thank you page. Comments Redirect plugin helps with this.

#4. Reward your commentators – There are many ways of acknowledging and ‘rewarding’ good comments that range from simply including a ‘good comment’ remark through to highlighting them in other posts that you write.

#5. Be controversial – It doesn’t always work but there’s nothing like controversy to get people commenting on your blog.

#6. Ask questions, Opinions, Feedback – Many Bloggers ask questions and user opinions on their posts, this really works as this encourages your readers to speak out there views.

#7. Participate actively – Be approachable, answer the questions and write your thoughts on your readers contribution. Giving importance and attention to your readers encourages them to become loyal readers and commenter’s of your blog. People are attracted to humility and are more likely to respond to it than a post written in a tone of someone who might harshly respond to their comments.

#8. Make it easy for commenting – Keep your comments section as simple and as easy to use as possible. You can use comment systems such as Disqus, IntenseDebate and JSkit, as all of these are fast and provide a lot more options.

#9. Engage your readers – Let your blog users subscribe to comments and the ongoing discussion. Subscribe To Comments plugin allows commenters on your blog to check a box and get e-mail notification of new comments in the discussion.

#10. Top Commentators – Give rewards to your top commenters. This is a great way to puff their ego and to increase their PR. Those users who are my biggest commenters will receive a Dofollow link from every single page on my site.

#11. Avoid Signups and captcha – I personally do not comment on blogs that needs a sign up to even comment. Instead of using captcha, you may revert to a standard anti-spam plugin (like – Akismet) to arrest spammer bots and humans.

#12. Faster moderation – If you want better response from commenters than try to moderate there comments as fast as possible and If you are  moderating comments only once in two or three days, the readers may hesitate to get engaged next time.

On the way to increasing the number of comments to your blog posts, you would need to build blog traffic first.

I believe #7 and the fact that your content should offer something that readers can’t get elsewhere are great ways to increase the amount of comments you receive.

Hi Dev, First time here at your blog and I have to tell you I’ve really enjoyed it. You certainly give some great tips and ideas. In this post I would have to agree with #8 & #11. In fact I had written a post once on making it easy for your reader to comment and to find the comment area. I’m especially with you on #11, I will not leave a comment if I have to find my book of passwords just to leave a comment, make it easy for me with my name and url and I’ll leave a comment, but if you make me hunt for my passwords or what have you I’m off to another blog. Great stuff here, and I will definitely be back here often. Love your blog. jj

Yes Devesh, these are really good tips. Infact encouraging our members to interact amongst themselves and with the moderator creates a good conversational point.

Just like you, I was hesitant posting comments that used sign ups and captcha, it is really annoying.

I would recommend not to get obsessed with pagerank. Google pagerank is just a irrelevant measure. What really matters is actually getting traffic and conversions. I have a PR4 site with just a few backlinks about 30. All sources are good but it does not have any traffic, why? because it needs authority and authority is not given by page rank.
