Alexa Rank is your site’s traffic ranking according to Alexa. It’s very important, especially if you are selling ad spaces on your website. It can provide you various monetary benefits as well because advertisers look for this rank to decide the cost of advertisements to be placed on your website or blog.
What is Alexa Rank?
Alexa’s definition of the Alexa Traffic Rank:
The traffic rank is based on three months of aggregated historical traffic data from millions of Alexa Toolbar users and is a combined measure of page views and users (reach). As a first step, Alexa computes the reach and number of page views for all sites on the Web on a daily basis.
The main Alexa traffic rank is based on the geometric mean of these two quantities averaged over time (so that the rank of a site reflects both the number of users who visit that site as well as the number of pages on the site viewed by those users)
Why would you want to improve your Alexa rank?

Write high-quality content that appeals to your blog visitors. Promote your content on social bookmarking sites, forums and on Twitter.

Alexa ranking is the blood line that most advertisers will look at to determine…”Hey how much is a site worth” Now some people will say alexa ranking aren’t 100% on point, which is the case with any other software online…Example “Google Analytics”
Anyway..I use Alexa to base what bloggers I want to network with before I contact them, its gives me a quick look whether or not the blog or website is worth my time communicating with.
Even though my blog has fallen some in the alexa ranking do to my lack of marketing the past 6 months, I’m still out here marketing my butt off to see my traffic and alexa ranking get back on it’s feet here soon.
Maybe get it back up the ladder like Devesh did in 4 months..LOL

Alexa is a system where all visit isn’t count. They only count the visit with alexa tool bar installed. And not all people installed alexa tool bar. But most of the Blogger and webmaster install it. So join in forum is really good idea. Because most of the forum user are webmaster or Blogger. So if you get visitor from forum, you chance is high to increase alexa rank. I’ve only been writing content and blog commenting for the last few months and you’re right to put content in the number 1 position. Even Tinh said it. It’s the quality of the content.

I am working on my new blog and so far my Alexa ranking went down from some 24M to currently around 224K in 3 weeks.
You list some great strategy and the definitely work.
A word on Alexa ranking though: ALEXA RANK metric is geared towards online marketers and does not truly measure ALL the traffic that might come to your site.
It’s based on the sample of Alexa tool bar users, it’s browser specific and can be easily manipulated. Plus, the formula itself Alexa uses to determine its page rank is overwhelmingly debated.
