How to Develop Relationships with Fellow Bloggers

Developing relationships with fellow bloggers is the same as developing friendships/relationships in real life. Relationships are not a one way street.

It takes two to make a relationship work. Online relationships must not be one way, where one person benefits while the other person doesn’t.

Today, you will learn a few ways you can develop awesome relationships with fellow bloggers.

  • Comment on their blogs. Whenever you visit a fellow bloggers website and you like what you see. Leave a comment! Make sure your comment is more than just “great post” and “thanks for the info.”
  • Subscribe to fellow blogger’s RSS feed. Subscribing will help you stay updated when a new post is published.  That way you can be a regular commenter too.
  • Send the fellow blogger an email. This can be a simple email, letting them know who you are and that you like their blog.
  • Follow them on Twitter. You can get to know your fellow blogger by following their tweets. Their tweets will tell you where their interests lie.
  • Offer to do a guest post. Submit a guest post to your fellow blogger. Once your post is accepted, you can be a regular guest poster on their blog.
  • Share the fellow blogger’s articles. Work together to support each other by tweeting, stumbling, digging, etc each other’s work. It only takes a few seconds to do this. So be kind enough to return the favor.
  • Remember the golden rule. If you are sharing your fellow blogger’s articles, writing guest posts for them, then they should be doing something for you in return. If it turns out that you are doing all the giving, then it is time to end that relationship.
  • Side note: Whenever I’m doing more of the giving and less of receiving, then just like real life relationships, I move on. Building relationships with fellow bloggers is a two-way street.

Some great tips there. Relationships are so important in business. a lot of people think that they can just be some kind of anonymous individual online and hide behind a persona. Not true. Build relationships and your business will grow a lot more quickly.

Evelyn, great post

You made a good point about relationship building being a two way street.. the law of reciprocation will always play out someday, and those you helped will feel they have to pay you back somehow..

thanks for this info

Hi Evelyn,

All the points were spot on. We need to know that we are not blogging alone. We need some help along the way in the blogging route. People will be more obliged to help if we can develop a good relationship with other bloggers.

Great tips! I think a lot of newcomers get so overwhelmed by a blogger’s history that they think they are unapproachable. But they’re just people, writing about their lives. They’re only famous in-so-far as their readers have made them.

The Bad Blogger - Fool Content For Smart Blogger August 27, 2010 at 10:21 pm

Well, there are many ways to build relationship, the best way I knew thus far is creating video of yourself talking about something to someone, what I really mean is, because people can’t touch you and feel you, by using video telling them about something such as giving them tips on something, usually it makes them feel, as though you are real as oppose to writing words to talk to them.
Although, I do not use video to communicate, but I believe video will almost does 80% of the work in building relationship.

Hi Hokya,
Thanks for sharing! I think email can be effective, especially if you’ve been commenting on the blog regularly. But I think it really depends on the person.

I sent a person an email to let them know how their post helped me and the results I got from following their step by step guide. They responded genuinely and kindly with no problem. So it can be effective in some cases.

Developing a relationship with bloggers is a good idea for any business, even beyond other “bloggers” per se. Blogs are one of the most effective methods of communication on the web, so businesses who take full advantage of the reach of bloggers are really ahead of the curve. Want your information distributed? Make friends with bloggers. Simple as that! These are great ways to do t.

Evelyn, I agree with what you say here.

And in general I agree with your last piece of advice. However, sometimes we help people who don’t help us back, either because they can’t or because they don’t notice we did things like tweet their blog posts, etc.

Hi John,
Yeah, I find that some people don’t notice that we do share their posts. But after awhile, I think they should notice, especially if we tweet a post and it has a mention for them. They shouldn’t miss that. But some probably don’t pay attention or even notice.

Thanks for sharing,

Remember the golden rule – this makes me feel a little better.

I was starting to feel bad that I am feeling a bit irked about tweeting/retweeting the hell out of others posts, and getting little to nothing in return.

Hi Dennis,
I hear you!

To be honest, when I see that people are not returning the favor, I will continue longer, giving them the benefit of the doubt. But when it becomes obvious that the favor is not being returned, I cut my losses and move on.

The “golden rule” is golden! :)
