Your domain name is what portrays who you are on the web, your domain name is your brand and it can have a positive or negative effect on you now or in the nearest future. Choosing a good domain name is a must for anybody who wants to have long term success on the internet.

Here are some tips for choosing a good domain name.

  1. Let it be the same as your website name: Don’t get confused yet; your domain name is yourdomain.com while website name is the website title, a good match of a domain name and title with domain name as “yourdomainname.com” will be “Your Domain”. This helps you in the form that it makes your domain name easy to remember and it also helps you easily rank for your keyword because if people want to link to you, they will most likely use your keyword which probably will be your anchor text.
  2. Let it be your brand name: A good example of a brand name will be Toyota.com for the vehicle TOYOTA. This helps you easily build and spread your  brand within a short period of time, it also makes your name popular e.g. Ben Lang is very popular due to him using the domain name ben-lang.com
  3. Keep it short: Try as much as possible to keep your domain name as short as possible, the 3 letters domain names have gone and for your to build your brand and get a short domain name, try to make sure your domain name is no longer than 12 characters.
  4. Avoid hyphens: When choosing a domain name, it is very important to avoid the use of hyphens in the domain name, a domain name which is lawyer.com will be more easy to remember than law-yer.com
  5. Try .com: The .com domain name is the most popular type of domain, most of your users will mistakenly type .com which will in turn lead them to competitors. Try to choose a .com domain only and if you already have a domain name, try to check if the .com is still available, buy it and redirect it to the other extension type.
  6. Trademark infringement: Try to make sure your domain name does not infringe other people trade mark, this isn’t good, avoid it as possible so that you won’t face any legal problems in the future. If you are not sure whether your domain name is infringing a trademark, try to research the domain name to know if the name is associated with any company before making a purchase.

All the above tips should be able to help you choose a better domain name.

Your domain name is what portrays who you are on the web, your domain name is your brand and it can have a positive or negative effect on you now or in the nearest future. Choosing a good domain name is a must for anybody who wants to have long term success on the internet.

Excellent tips Onibalusi!

I have chosen a combination of my name and what my website offers as: samswebguide.com and this has been working for me because it is catchy and I’m being found in search engines fairly easy.

A great domain name is like a real estate investment and if you happen to come up with a very unique name or business idea and you have an extra 10 bucks or so, buy it! You can never tell what that domain name may be worth in the future.

Great article, keep it up.
