Guest Blogging - More Than Just Backlinks

If you’ve done a little research into marketing your website you’ve probably run across the term “link building” – and naturally one easy and fast way to do this it to guest post on blogs. And there limitless blogs around you are able to post on. However link building is not the end all be all of guest blogging. If it were anyone could just start limitless blogs on free hosting sites like WordPress and Blogspot, write a piece about how great your site or product is, copy, paste, repeat.

Fortunately for web surfers search engines are smarter than that. Could you imagine if every search you made gave you result based on who has contributed the most spam to the internet? People would stop using it. So here are the main points to keep in mind when guest blogging for backlinks:

1. It’s not just for a backlink! If that is your only goal you’re missing a great opportunity and wasting your time. Even more important than the number links, is who is linked. A link from a good site is worth way more than a hundred links from bad sites. In order to ensure you have a quality link, you need to ensure you are posting on a quality site. For a site to remain in good standing, it needs to offer quality content. You as a guest blogger are the content. Provide good content and it increases the worth of your link.

2. Create content people want to read. You aren’t really allowed to just sell your stuff on a quality site. Any site that lets you post a sales piece and call it a blog, or PR, or “article” probably isn’t worth much for links anyway. And who on earth really reads post after post of someone selling them something? Offer real information that people will actually use.

3. Assume people are reading your content. That is the goal, and if you are guest posting at the right kind of sites than you will have an audience. So take the time to say the right things the right way.

Guest Posting is good way to create backlinks but it’s also good way to attract readers from one particular blog.

Guest posting on blogs is definitely an easy and fast way to build links, but you make a great point that it’s not just for a backlink.

Creating content people really want to read is the most important thing to me.

It’s like you said, it’s important to post on a quality site and no quality site will accept your content if it doesn’t appeal to it’s readers. Thanks for sharing your insights Jeffrey, much appreciated.

Exactly that’s one of the benefits associated with good content. Guest posting is just one way amongst others to distribute your content. Most blogs are nofollow so backlink may be the last thing to have in mind when guest posting.

While creating guest posts instead of just thinking about the backlink we need to concentrate on the quality of the post. If the post we write is of good quality then readers of the guest post will start visiting the author’s blog.

It’s funny when I see people going after link trading websites to get backlinks when guest blogging is such a better alternative. Sometimes it can be hard to churn out a lot of great content that people want to read though.

Hey Jeff,

Thanks for the awesome article!

You are totally correct about guest blogging in my opinion. You should just submit any type of guest article, but instead only the best you have. The articles you write for other people have to be of the best quality you can possibly put together. When you provide top quality content and have it viewed by new eyes, then it will boost your readership & authority.

Just my 2 cents!

God bless,

Guest blogging is great for a back link but it is also a great way to promote yourself to a wider audience. Broadening your audience is very important if you want to have success with blogging.

You make some good points. I would even go further and say any post you make should be in the top 15% of your best articles. A guest post should be a chance to meet a whole new group of people and the only way to get them to follow the link (and get posted to the “better” sites is to simply be really impressive.

Making sure you put your best foot forward with your best stuff ensures this. It is all about giving away great content to get more followers. It should be a win win.. the blog owner gets great content and a day off, the blogger gets the links and a lot of direct traffic if it is great content.

Also it is important to interact with people and gain just that little extra interest in visiting you site,

Some good points are made in your post. I think guest blogging is a great
thing to do I just wish it wasn’t so time consuming. I find leaving relevant
comments are also important and quicker.

The fact is that guest posting is not only for link building like you said, but it can also bring you traffic and increase your reputation.

It’s like a market place where you present yourself and your merchandise (website) to others bloggers audience and because of this, with your blog you have to reach out to them and make them come back to your website again and again.

Also, thinking of guest posting as a method only for link building is actually a waste of your resources because there are many other methods which are more simple and easier to accomplish then this.

Guest posting is best used for so called “hijacking” other blogs traffic and audience and try to make it your own. But using it for link building is just a waste of time.

True enough, guest blogging is not for the backlink only. You must produce quality content because it will be read by a lot of readers on the blog.

Hi Ryan,

I agree. The content of your blog would be the most valuable piece that will let you share your expertise and what other things you can offer to the world. Needless to say, your blog will make the first impression to your audience and having said that, you need to ensure that you only produce impressive blogs that are worth reading.

I agree with you about those 3 points. I never guest blog before, only write articles to article sites but I guess I will need to write some now. Guest blogging approval rate, in my opinion, is faster than article sites and in some cases, the links and readers are more worthwhile. :)
