Even though blogs can only be made up of your domain name and wordpress installation, I can tell you not all blogs are the same and what determines the success or failure of a blog is how successful it is. In order to get results from your blogging efforts your blog must be on fire, once your blog is on fire you can then work to make sure you keep the fire burning. This post will be listing 7 sure-fire ways to put your blog on fire.
1. Give Your Readers Sliced Bread
Since the word “content is king” is being said almost every time and many bloggers don’t even want to hear it I have decided to give it a better name. Try to make sure you give your readers your best, focus all your efforts on providing value day and night and you will begin to experience a significant growth. There are several ways to make sure your content resonates with your readers and one of the best ways to make sure you write what your readers love is by making sure you know what they want. You can also take a look at the most popular posts on other blogs in your niche and see if you can write something that relates to that.
2. Your Design
Try to make your blog design as unique as possible because your design will affect how your content will be presented. One very important aspect many bloggers neglect is their blog design, they believe content is king therefore design plays no role in the success of a blog. I as a person, I hate visiting blogs with poor design and I am very sure this applies to many other people. Your blog design should not just be beautiful but should make it easy for your readers to find what they want, a good design should also make it easy for your readers to subscribe to your blog.
3. Setup Your Feed
This might sound funny but believe me, it isn’t. I have lost count of the number of blogs I would have subscribed to but I couldn’t due to them not having feeds enabled. One of the first things you should do after creating your blog is to make sure subscription via feed is enabled, this makes it easy for your readers to subscribe to your blog and receive updates in their readers or their email. There are many feed distribution services but the best and most used is Feedburner. After your feed is ready, the next step is to make sure email subscription is enabled and you can read this post on how to do that. One major mistake I see made by many bloggers is that they think you don’t need to enable email subscription on your blog if you have a mailing list because that will help you gain more subscribers to your blog. This is so wrong and it doesn’t matter whether you have email subscription enabled or not, you will still get the same mailing list subscriber. I wrote a guest post in which I linked to my blog and my mailing list (I didn’t link to my feed) and I got close to 100 mailing list subscribers, I also wrote another guest post and I linked to both and I got over 150 subscribers from both (I even got more mailing list subscribers than the first guest post). Every form of subscriber you get matters a lot.
Now that you are done with the basics, the next step is to work on the next important aspect of putting your blog on fire and that is the promotion aspect. There are several ways to promote your blog and I will be listing the ones that works for me below NOTE: I am not listing it in any order, just randomly.
4. Blog Commenting
There are so many blogs on the internet and you can easily use the power of blog commenting to build more traffic and brand for your blog. It is very important to take some things into consideration when trying to put your blog on fire using blog commenting and I will be listing some of those things below:
- Use your name only when commenting – Don’t use keywords.
- Read the post properly before commenting.
- Don’t comment to say “thank you”, comment only if you have something to say.
- Try to have a gravatar, it makes your look more professional – You can get your gravatar here.
You could get more results from your blog commenting efforts if you could effectively follow the tips above.
5. Guest Blogging
This is what I do when I want to increase my blog subscribers. Guest blogging is really a great way to gain more traffic and awareness for your blog and depending on how it is used, it can be your best investment for your blog. When trying to promote your blog through guest blogging there are several questions you should ask yourself, some of the questions are listed below:
- What is your main purpose for guest posting – if it is to gain more subscribers you will benefit more by linking directly to your feed in your author bio.
- Which type of blogs are you targeting – is it closely related niche blogs or otherwise?
- What size of blogs are you writing for – Is it the big blogs or small ones?
After having written over 230 guest posts I will tell you that guest posting for other blogs isn’t a bed of roses and there are several things you must consider in order to make sure your guest post is accepted:
- Read the guidelines properly.
- Analyze the type of guest posts published on the blog recently – this helps make it easy for your guest post to be accepted.
- Make sure you proofread your guest post properly – this is one of the many reasons guest posts get rejected.
- Spend as much time as you can crafting the title of your guest post – this can determine if your guest post will be accepted or not (sincerely!).
After you have followed the above tips, write your best post ever and submit it as a guest post to another blog, you will be amazed at the result you will get from it.
6. SEO – Search Engine Optimization
Many bloggers (new ones especially) neglect this very important aspect of SEO. Have you ever thought of getting 1500+ visitors to your 2-months-old blog from search engines? That was what I was getting when my blog was 2 months old. Search engine traffic is one of the best traffic type you can get and unlike other traffic sources it only requires little effort from your part. Another great advantage of search engine traffic is that once it is live you will begin to get traffic on autopilot. There are several ways to optimize your blog for the search engines and I will be listing some great ways below:
- Don’t neglect the on-page aspect of your blog’s SEO – this includes the meta title, meta keyword and the keyword density of your blog posts.
- Always be careful when you link to other sites.
- Always work on building high-quality backlinks to your blog – some great methods you can use are guest blogging, directory submission, forum posting and blog commenting.
Once you have followed the above steps and you keep on updating your blog regularly you will begin to get some good results from the search engines.
7. Build a List
This has been my best investment for my blog so far and it is my best traffic source. I am planning to start some services on my blog and I sent a mail to my list to ask them what they want me to help them with, I checked back the next day to see my inbox flooded with reply. Having a mailing list is very important if you want to set your blog on fire not only because of the opportunity to make money it provides but because you can easily get in touch with your readers anytime you want.
Search engines can do anything to your rankings when they want, other traffic sources may vanish but your list is yours forever. Your mailing list is your best and wisest investment.
Building a successful blog can always be a challenge, but it is no longer a challenge if you do the right thing at the right time. The above are some really great tips to put your blog on fire.
