Find Out How To Turn Your Personal Blog Into an Online Hub

Every blog owner knows that their personal site can create a very powerful and engaging online community. As long as fresh, interesting, and relevant content is being put out there each and every time, it can continue to grow into an online hub for everyone else.

However, many find it challenging to be consistent with creating an excellent content which compels people to visit their site. How can one sustain a personal blog that persuades readers to visit often and make it their own hub online where they can interact with other people?

Build an Online Community.

A simple strategy is to utilize your blog site’s visitors and get them to create your content for you. You make this possible by creating an online community for your blog through your own social networking forum. This way, they can talk about topics that matter to them, and contribute valuable information for everyone else’s benefit. You want them to create their own profiles or identities online, and be able to support and talk with everyone in the community. Of course, you will have to do your part too, and promote your blog not only through traditional advertising or by posting updates on your social media networks, but also reaching out to your visitors and engaging them into a worthwhile communication.

Identify your Platforms.

Building an online community for your site starts with researching and then identifying the available platforms that would be most suitable for your blog. Install a forum plug-in; look for some popular programs to create a forum in your blog. You can also have a forum custom-built for your site or have social media tools integrated into your online community to have a greater reach of your target market.

Twittter, Facebook and LinkedIn, are just some of the popular social media tools that are being utilized by many blog owners to generate more visitors to their site and establish it as a successful online hub. If you have a niche in your industry, you can also search for platforms that will cater to your needs, because every industry has their own groups and/or forums that are exclusive to that industry.

Identify your purpose.

Build your presence in your online community by having a deep understanding to your purpose- what you hope to accomplish. Set the obvious reasons aside, such as garnering more traffic or sales and know other objectives as to why you want to turn your personal blog into an online hub. It is easy to make decisions when you’ve taken into consideration other people’s expectations, and integrating them with your own.

This is essential when you have your platform or forum software set up. You’ll need to know your forum’s purpose, that should be consistent with the concept of your site. For instance, if your blog is about baking, your forum’s objective could be to give bakers a place to swap recipes, share tips about their baking experiences and provide feedback about your blog content.

Have a Commitment.

You must decide for yourself how much time, money, and research you’re ready to invest in your blog and the online community. There are so many stories of people dedicating so much time in the beginning of their new blog, only to abandon it in the end. You want to make sure that you can be consistent with your updates, regularly check on your visitors to see if they have any concerns. Have realistic commitments that you can keep. Always remember that the longer you are not around, the faster people will forget about you.

Set your Goals.

Know what you need to accomplish and the time frame you have to accomplish it. Try to focus on getting more targeted visitors to your blog and what their needs are. Once you have a game plan on providing what your readers are looking for, it becomes easier to lure more. Set real numbers of what you wish to achieve, for instance, if you want to have 5,000 subscribers in a month, try to reach that goal but allow yourself the opportunity for failure, and then work doubly hard to avoid it. Goals that are more attainable will encourage you to keep pressing on even at hard times. The most important thing that should be on your mind is building your online community so that your blog can become an online hub.

Promote your online community.

Make your blog attractive from the very start because it is unlikely for first-time visitors to take the effort of searching for your site, signing up for your forum, and start adding value to the community. Make sure that your content and presentation is good; it is readable, interactive, consistent with updates, and engaging with audio visuals.

Build a long-term relationship with your visitors by communicating with not only with your list of qualified customers, but with other bloggers and readers as well. Collecting their names and Emails and promoting your blog through email and social media marketing. Build a list to market your forum to. Make use of plug-ins and widgets, promote contests and freebies, to popularize your site.

Maintain and Repeat.

As you begin to reach your goals and gain some popularity, more people will be receptive and responsive to your messages. When you already have a loyal base of readers and an active online community, maintain relationships with them as you continue to build, promote and optimize your blog with persistence. It’s all about finding the balance to interact with new people while not forgetting about the blood that pumps your blog alive. Balance your time with the established community versus growing your community. With enough patience, you will build a personal blog that will turn into a popular online hub.

I have learned to realize, if you want success as a blogger: Keep within your niche, be consistent and stay on course without being erratic.

Hi Ally,
Thanks for the insightful article. I’m looking for ways to take our blog “to the next level” and this is something I will seriously consider. It just makes a lot of sense, especially when time is an issue.

Better to have others creating content through their discussions than trying to do it all yourself!

Thanks for the tips!

Hey Ally,

I think finding the right platform is they key. Coz not every platform can suit one. Some do great with Twitter, some with FB and others with LinkedIn. It all depends on what kind of person one is and the niche of the blog as well.

Solid information.

Cheers,
Jane.

Hi Ally,
Great information here. I have always believed that the best blogs initiate conversations and then the readers should take it from there so this is very much taking that a step further.

I think that it is really important to be consistent with what you do. Have a preplanned posting schedule so that your readers will also know when you’re going to post your next article. Also, do not just blog and blog without actually experiencing it or even living your life outside the corners of your home office or room.

Great article Ally!

HI Ally, you mentioned so many fantastic suggestions and tips… the part that really “rang a bell” with me was when you mentioned the importance of maintaining relationships and said :

“It’s all about finding the balance to interact with new people while not forgetting about the blood that pumps your blog alive.”

It is SO true to keep the good stuff coming as well as maintain relationships… and as you say it definitely comes down to consistency and balance.

Wonderful post!

Hi Ally! Very informative post. I have been thinking about creating an online hub and trying to do that through an online community, so your post here fits right in with that.

Not only that, but a business coach suggested it as well. So I am thinking maybe I better give it some more thought as to how I would do it.

Thanks for your post!

Ally – You make a good point about commitment. The more you show up, the less likely people are to forget about you. There really is no such thing as too much promotion because the moment you stop, your growth backslides.

Also, knowing where to show up is key and joining communities where “your people” already hang out is a great tip.

Nice to see someone bringing up the unavoidable issue of ‘Identifying Your Purpose’ Ally.

For all the talk of how to arrange a blog/forum/website and drive traffic to it, there are far too few who seriously address the question of purpose. Once this element is in place, the other components become far more empowered and effective at doing their job.

Great post, you’ve laid out the process really clearly.
Thanks for sharing.

Hi Ally,

Thanks for this post because I have been thinking about starting an online community at another one blog. I need to do more research as to which plugin to use for forums and for the community to submit posts and photos.

I like that you wrote about commitment because it does take time to start a blog but you need to keep a realistic schedule that allows you to blog for the long-run. It’s easy to start out strong and just blogging for 3 months, I know how tiring it can be and at times, there’s even the temptation to stop altogether.

I have tweaked my schedule and it’s now more comfortable with just 3-4 posts a week. Blogging is not only writing posts but also going out there to promote it. Building relationships take time but the results are worth it.
