One thing I have noticed about blogging is that there are several days where I could easily write five articles. I feel like it is a great day to update my blog and I end up posting several articles for that day.
I love these kinds of days because I feel like I am writing great content for my audience. I get really excited to post these articles and I’m very happy that I can add three to five posts to my site in a single day.
Every now and then I reach a writer’s block, burnout day. These two problems definitely go hand in hand with and feed off of each other. These are the days where you are tired, you don’t want to write, you can’t think of anything to write and you are not interested.
Every blogger has a day like this. It isn’t your fault and you are not a bad blogger. The one thing you can’t do is lose all interest and get frustrated. There are several things you can do to counteract this. I have come up with a list of things I like to do when these days occur, they have helped me and hopefully they will help you too!
Take a Break
This one is simple and very effective. Whenever you feel like this, just take a break from your blog period. Don’t do anything related to it at all. Don’t use social media for your blog, don’t promote it, don’t write, don’t fix your design, etc.
Everyone needs a break, when you work hard for so long, it definitely becomes tiring. If you like to post content daily (like I do) you can become extremely tired and frustrated fast. Just leave it alone for a day and be ready to get back at it tomorrow.
Now some people may say that if you want a successful blog then you have to stick with it day in and day out. Your readers want content and won’t stay at your blog if it isn’t updated daily. I read about blogging everyday and I constantly see that everywhere. I don’t agree with this. What does it hurt to take a day off every week or every other week? It really doesn’t hurt anything.
Write About Something Outside of Your Niche
Why not? You have to be interested in something more than just your blog niche. Write about something you always wanted to write about. If you blog about sports, then talk about a movie you just watched. If you blog about cooking, then make a post about a book you read. It is your blog, and you make the rules.
By doing this is shows the audience a little more about you. Blogging is all about personal connections and friendships. This will tell the readers something else you are interested in and show them that you are human, and not some robot with a blog.
People may say that you shouldn’t do this because it turns your readers off. They go to your blog for posts about the niche. On the most part this isn’t true. If someone is a true subscriber and reader, then they go to your blog for you. Whether you are an expert or not, they want to hear what you have to say, so tell them.
Work on Social Media and Promoting
There is no rule that says you have to post every single day. You can always do something else to help get your blog more exposure and more traffic. Social media is a great way to do this. There are several things you can do to help your blog.
You can connect with some readers and potential readers. Keep building those relationships, because they are single handedly the most important aspect of blogging. Start conversations and debates to get your opinion out there. Let people know what you feel strongly about, so that people with similar and even opposite opinions can talk and connect with you.
To get anywhere blogging you need to work on exposure. People need to be able to find your blog to be able to read it. Something else you could do is touch up your facebook fan page. Make it more appealing to potential readers.
Redo an Old Post
I haven’t tried this yet, but I have read a lot about it and how it can help. I’m sure you have at least one post that you thought was absolute gold. A post that you felt would be interesting to a lot of your readers and that would get you tons of hits, but never ended up getting much at all.
Why not try it again? You are struggling anyway and this can only help your cause. The first impact it could have is that the second time you do this post it might be that big post you thought it would be. I’m sure you know more now about the subject than when you did when you posted it.
Another thing this is doing for your blog is expanding it. If anything this makes your blog a little bigger and gives you another page to be indexed by search engines, that’s a lot more valuable than it seems.
I hope this list helps you the next time you have a day with burnout and writers block. Always remember, if blogging was easy, then it wouldn’t be worth it. Just keep working through those tough days and you’ll succeed!

Nice tips
usually relaxing a bit helps a lot
Absolutely, just getting away from it for a day or two can really help. You have to remember to get back at it, much more motivated than before!
Good article. You are right… what I usually do is to guest blog. This usually refreshes my mind and helps with burnout.

Absolutely, I guest post on this site and what I write about on here is much different than what I write about on my site. My goal here is to help give people skills that I have picked up upon since starting. It is a very nice change of pace!
Derek,
Great post … I totally agree that you need to take a break otherwise you can sit there all day staring at the monitor and get nothing done. Whenever I am feeling like that I like to get the coat on and take my dog for a walk. When I return home I am ready for work, even if it is just site promotion instead of blogging.

Great idea, I think the main point to get from all of this is to take your mind off of writing for a little while. Then come back with a renewed motivation.
I haven’t tried this “redoing old post Derek”. Let me find that gold post and may get rolling again like you’ve mentioned. Thanks that was an excellent idea. Rehash and re post…

I’m glad it helped! It is a simple and quick way to get a new post up when you are having trouble posting new material.
Hey, Derek! I’ve seen a post of yours on the site before, and just read this one. I’m really liking your style (I even went to your blog and read a few articles – it takes a lot to get me to do that).
Anyway, onto the point. On my previous blog, I would constantly be inspired. I could write 5-15 articles a day. But you cannot release multiple posts, for they will:
1) Not get enough views.
2) Cost you more content later on down the road.
So I’d take the 15 articles I wrote, and space them out. It’d help me not burn out.

Thanks Joe, I really appreciate the support and interest in my writing! You are definitely correct on this one. Writing multiple posts and spacing them out can definitely allow you to take a break, while still releasing content! Great point!
Good tips Derek!
I take breaks on the hour. 10 minutes. No exception. I sit and visualize my dreams or meditate. I never run of out ideas – and I run 4 blogs – because sitting quietly helps me realize *I* am blocking ideas and creating my burnout.
Thanks for sharing!

Taking a break always important and you should not neglect it at all. I know when you initially start your work you’re too passionate about it and usually don’t care about rest and break but still you need to give some rest to your body, It’s really important and helps to keep your mind refresh.

Thank you for reading! Time off is very important to keep motivation.
Good advice, Derek. When I get a burnout, I take a break, go for a short holiday. After the holiday, I usually feel fully refreshed and ready to start blogging again!
Jasmine@Top Web Hosts´s last [type] ..Web Hosting Uptime Guarantee – FatCow
I feel the same way, holidays can help tremendously, no matter how small!
There are many times that this happen to me, the best option when something like this happen is to do something that has nothing to do with writing and your PC, so you could clean up your office, take a walk outside or even making a list of what you have to do during this week, All these really help to refresh your shelf and “charge your batteries”

I can relate perfectly to what you’re saying, Derek. On some days, the creative juices just flow like water while on other days, the inspiration tap is just shut. During those times, taking a break is the first thing I do. Normally it’s a bit of watching TV or going out for a walk. But sometimes, even that is not enough and that is when I take a weekend off and go to somewhere peaceful and scenic where I can truly recharge myself and get my blogging motivation back.

I agree with you Derek, there are those who never get burned out while blogging, others 50/50, and the others get it all the time. For me, one great thing to deal with this is to search for inspiration such as taking a break, just relaxing and spending time with family.
