How to Build a Strong Community Around Your Blog

Building a strong community takes time and effort, for some, it takes years, for some, it takes months. Applying the right principles and following the footsteps of the successful will help you do more in a short period of time.

The aim of this post is to give you some points and also back it up with some real examples.

Unique and Valuable Content

Writing unique and valuable posts is one of the most effective and sure-fire way to build a strong community on your blog. You must first understand that there are different type of communities, there is a type in which people just come and go, there is another one in which people come with full respect for the owner of the blog which will even reflect both in and outside of the blog.

There is no secret to building a great community than writing great and unique content which sets you apart from the crowd.

Here are some great examples:

1. Glen Allsop from ViperChill

Glen writes great and unique posts on His blog, and His traffic has been increasing significantly with time, He has also been able to build a very strong community which eventually results in lots of comments, retweet and subscribers.

2. Nicholas Cardot from Site Sketch 101

Nicholas is really an awesome blogger, he writes unique content and also has a great and strong personality.

If you are yet to, I will straight-on advice you to be reading His personal Blog at Nicholas Cardot.com because anytime I read any of his articles, I experience a change in mood, I will feel the passion with which he talks and it will look exactly as if He is talking to me.

3. Pat Flynn from Smart Passive Income

Pat’s blog is really great and he shares lots of great tips, his content is absolutely unique and He also maintains great transparency on His blog.

Be Engaging

You will notice that all the blogs i listed above are engaging in one form or the other.

You want a community, and a community is not made up of one person only, you should be able to interact with your readers both on and off your blog, you should be able to reply comments, mails and tweets because this makes you more unique thereby attracting more people to your community.

Market! Market! Market!

I would not give you a definition for marketing because I don’t think I have a definition for it, I will rather say it is how you can attract people to your community.

If you write great blog posts, how can others know about this?

You should try to network with other bloggers outside your blog because you will have to build outside before the inside is complete.

You cannot do it alone, two or more people can easily achieve what a person might not otherwise have achieved.

Try to market your blog and don’t just rely on the belief “Content is King“. There is no doubt content is king but if you cannot market the content then I don’t see any point in it being King.

Is it a king that will go on errands? Secure Himself and the likes? No! The king needs support and the king can never be alone, marketing is the right support to give your content.

Ask for It!

Many new bloggers wonder why some blogs are filled with comments while some have none. If you have a lot of readers, if there is no call to action then the comments you get will be limited.

If you ask for it, your readers will be more willing to start it.

Your community is incomplete without your readers, why not let them start it?

Some example of call to actions are:

  1. What do you think about this post?
  2. I would like to have your own point of view?

You will notice the questions above are questions so they must be answered, they will also create in your readers the want to participate.

Your Views

What do you think? Do you have anything to add to the list? I will be very happy to hear from you in the comments section.

One of the overlooked methods to building a great community is not just connecting with other bloggers but connecting with people commenting directly on your blog – I know this sounds common sense but you have to ask yourself: am I going after other bloggers in my niche who may not completely know who I am or should I build stronger relationships with people that do aka. commentors.

Starting with a few commentors, visit their blogs and leave comments, email them and help promote their articles. From there, see if you can work with them on projects. What eventually happens is they will tell their blogging friends which creates a larger circle. Repeat the process and you’ll soon build a really large network to work with.

Compound your actions is all I can say.

Hi,

Great advice.

I agree, viper chill has built a great community.

I was impressed by the number of comments there.

I was also impressed by the smarpassiveincome blog.

Even though he has so many comments on his blog, Pat replies to every comment!

Now that increases loyalty among the readers!

I agree that community is key, and in the beginning your focus should be on building and maintaining this, more so than posting on your own blog, as stupid as that sounds

Hi Onibalusi,

Wow, great article and examples. Content is King but it does have to be marketed. I know a blogger who writes good content, but does not do much to market it, so his blog does not grow or make very much money.

Building a community is extremely important.

By the way, thanks for commenting on my blog!

I love the blogs you mentioned above, as well as their communities. Establishing community work just like you said . . . write great content, invite responses and interact, and get out and promote your work. Perfect formula!

I think it’s really important to actually get some people to go to your blog, first. So, marketing should be at the top.

If there isn’t anyone at your blog, how the hell are you going to build a community?

I think Glen at Viperchill is a legend, especially since he is not actually trying to sell us anything (this really makes him stand out in my book).

Thanks for the awesome post Onibalusi!

If I might add one encouraging ‘add-on’ to your “Market, Market, Market!” section of the article…

If you’re strapped for time or just don’t have a lot of motivation. You can build a HUGE following by consistently posting comments on other related blogs in your niche and guest posting. Remember, do it on a regular basis and you’ll get results (traffic, subscribers, etc).

I think you can definitely attest to that Onibalusi as you’ve built up a great community with your blog using those two tactics as well.

In my opinion without having quality content, all of the techniques in the world can’t help you build a community. Content is without a doubt the king. The problem is that providing quality articles can sometimes be a daunting task, since a lot of factors are playing a role. Being motivated is the most important of those as I see it.

Personally I think that even though content is king, yes, building up the community makes content even stronger. It’s all about helping each other out in the end.

Whether you’re just visiting or buying something, it takes knowing each other better to really give it some more each time.
