4 Things You MUST Do to Become a Successful Affiliate Marketer

Success as an affiliate marketer doesn’t have to be as complicated as many people make it out to be. There isn’t a secret code or obscure system that needs to be unearthed to find success. A lot of what we do as affiliate marketers comes down to common sense and basic business principles. In this article I will present some of the “must-do” things that you should adopt if you want to make money as an affiliate.

1. Understand That Affiliate Marketing is a Lifestyle- Not a Job

Affiliate marketing isn’t for everyone. While the lure of earning money online is attractive to many, this choice of career isn’t suitable to all. Before deciding to pursue a career as an affiliate marketer ask yourself these questions:

  • Am I willing to learn and gain the necessary knowledge to succeed?
  • D o I have any sort of marketing or business skills?
  • Will my immediate family embrace my decision to pursue this route?
  • Can I accept the fact that I might earn little to no income in the beginning?

These are just some of the questions you should pose to yourself. Deep introspection is required before you take the leap to become an affiliate marketer because the road is uphill and if you want to do it you must give it 100% commitment. You can’t start this business half-hearted. You either give it your all, or nothing!

2. Choose a Big and Established Industry That You Love

When you decide on the niche you want to pursue you need to identify whether or not you possess an element of passion or a desire to learn about that particular niche. If any of these elements are missing you will find yourself skipping from one industry to the next without achieving much success while wasting your time. Besides having an interest in the niche, the niche itself needs to be marketable and it should contain some sort of commercial value. If you are a mother and love caring for babies, you may want to enter the baby-product industry. If you love getting discounted products and collecting promotional vouchers, you may prefer to choose the coupon industry. If you are a techie and love websites and technology you may want to enter the product review and web-hosting industry. If you love fitness and health, you may want to get into the wellness arena. If you love touring, flying or cruising you may choose to enter the traveling and hospitality industry. Each are huge affiliate marketing sectors with established merchants that offer generous commissions.

3. Build an Big Email List and Turn it Into a Loyal Customer Base

If you’ve been researching affiliate marketing or if you have some experience in the field, you would have heard the popular phrase that has become a cliché: “The Money is in the List.” Clichés are formed over time because they are true! There is no doubt that your income can increase exponentially if you possess an email list. Part of your business model should incorporate the building of a list, and this activity should be carried out as soon as you initiate any sort of marketing campaign. Make sure your blog or website has an opt-in box with a great conversion rate. Ideally, you want 5-10% of the people who visit your pages to subscribe to your newsletter.

4. Offer Consistent Content Value and Valuable Information for FREE

Why do people return to a blog they have visited in the past? Simply put, it is because they found something of value on that particular site. By offering value through your content you do the groundwork that assists you in gaining the trust of your visitor. This will heighten your credibility and increase the number of visitors who subscribe to your email list.

These are 4 practical approaches that need to be considered and applied to reach a high level of income in affiliate marketing. Are you able to see that there is no magic bullet to success in this industry? Have you got any other “must-do” things to become a top affiliate marketer?

True but affiliate marketing is classified into two. The first one is the relationship-based affiliate marketing wherein you utilize a list and promote stuff to people based on that relationship and the second one is the CPA-ppc space wherein you don’t need to build any relationship. I’ve done a lot of the second one and its very profitable but I can say that the first one is an interesting thing to work out as well.

Hi Melvin, PCC is a more costly method to promote your affiliate products. Moreover, many Merchants do not allow PCC marketing expecially on keywords related to their brand. Email marketing is a time consuming method, but if done successfully it can be lucrative. My favourite however is Search Engine Marketing through SEO.

I definitely agree with what you’ve written here. It’s important to offer free valuable content in addition to your affiliate product. Have you tried any type of cpc campaigns instead of just email lists?

Although building a list is important it important to build the correct list as well. I had a list of more than 500 from data entry area and it was not so profitable, but a list I build for FOREX trading had only around 40 people but it was pretty successful for me. You need to find active subscribers and gradually remove the other if you want to be successful in email marketing

Very true Nishadha, Any list is not the right list. It has to be targeted! That is why people should not just “buy” lists. They are costly, nor targeted and generate a very poor response.

These are great tips, I think a big mistake a lot of potential affiliate marketers make is that they try to jump into niche’s they really have no personal interest in. Success in a niche requires one to actually have (at least a little) passion about the product.

Alex Papa March 14, 2011 at 5:43 pm

Hi Daniel, to have a personal interest in a niche, especially at the start, makes the work like fun!Somebody said once “if you love what you do or do what you love, you’ll never have to work again”!

Hello Alex,

Affiliate marketing is indeed not for the fainthearted, you have to gave some skills before you try to sell something to people. It’s exactly as in real life, if you can’t sell an hot-dog to a hungry new-yorker you will for sure not be able do money in this business.

Being a successful marketer also depends on how motivate you are but most of all it also needs a bit of luck.

You have to have enough people skill to create a certain bond with the people in your email list and have enough convincing power the make them understand that they need the products you are offering.

Whenever the situation, this is for sure not a over-night success story!

Awesome post Papa,
I agree with your points man. If you can offer value, believe me you will be a pro affiliate marketer. Yeah, affiliate marketing is a lifestyle and not a job :) But don’t forget to persist until you succeed. Thanks for sharing :)

Mouh March 14, 2011 at 11:28 pm

Thanks for these tips.

Novices sometimes think that giving your best and most valuable information for free is kinda dangerous. If you don’t succeed, your lose everything including your best information. Truth is, if you give your valuable information you’ll undoubtedly succeed. Always put doubt and negativity aside. Never say, “what if I don’t make it”. Just say, “I am giving m best info and I shall and will make it!”

Kindest regards.

I think the problem many affiliates face is that they come from a mindset of “how can I make moniez online, without doing any work.” They don’t want to offer value in the process.

Thanks for the great post, Alex.

Well Webhosting affiliate works better for webmaster I think . If you have good readership than you can offer free blog creation services and tell them to buy hosting from your sources . Now here you need to join almost all big companies , So you can offer all kind of plan rates to your client . You have mentioned nice points and hope newbies learn them before entering this bust area .

Hi Alex,
All the points you said are all true when it comes to being successful at affiliate marketing. I do agree that there are times it can really be hard to market a certain product or service, while you see others who have no difficulties at marketing that same product/service at all. Your last point, providing free and valuable information is most likely the best things an affiliate marketer can offer. Thanks for sharing!

Hey Alex, the Papa’s meet again:) I see everyone talks about the mail list concept. It’s true; any list is not the right list as you’re saying. Building a community of interacting members who have things in common is one of the strongest assets for a blogger. It takes time and hard work but it’s a great investment.

It’s true: “The Money is in the List”. I think this is one of the most important things about internet marketing. If you don’t have a list, there is no money. Good thing that this article has been brought up because it is important to all people who are affiliate marketer to know that there are some important things to be successful on this field.

Thank you for this article!

Such a lucrative article. Everyone here agree with what Alex said. But why to focus offline marketing only for Affiliate Marketing. To send email to make your visitors your customers lies under offline. The best and easy way to go for this is by Social Media. Get email from the list you have search for them on Social Media sites by their emails and then tell them about your products. By this you will not only be able to win their trust but you also get the chance to win the heart of their friends and so on .

Hey Alex,

I think you’ve condensed a very good summary about affiliate marketing into one blog post. I think there’s a lot of things about affiliate marketing that can be learned only through doing it. You can read every single blog post, ebook, article, course on the internet but without doing it and experimenting, you’ll never know what works and what doesn’t
