4 Ultra Simple Ways To Get More Comments On Your Blog Post

Blogging is all about creating a loyal community of readers and fans, but in order to create that community there needs to be some type of interaction.

The good thing is that, as bloggers, we can create the proper environment that encourages reader engagement. You see.. engaged readers are more likely to become loyal readers, and loyal readers are more likely to subscribe.

So, it’s very important that we get our readers to comment on our blog posts. Another reason is that Comments = Social Proof. Think about it…

If 5, 10, 20 people loved what you’re talking about on your blog, and take the time to let you know in a comment, then anyone who visits your blog after the fact will view your content as a credible piece of information. So, now that you know why you want blog comments (..not like I had to convince you), here a list of the 4 simple ways to get more of them.

Simple Tip #1 – If you want more comments, ASK FOR THEM

This is simple strategy but it works like crazy! Simply asking people to share their thoughts in the comments section below will increase the number of people who actually do it. Don’t assume your readers know what to do, or assume they’re gonna do it anyway. Tell them, and the chances of them taking a few extra seconds and commenting increases.

Simple Tip #2 – Reward Your Commentators

I use a wordpress widget called “Top Commentators” which creates a list of the most frequent commentators on your sidebar. If the people in your target market have blogs or websites, they’re gonna want to appear on the top commentators widget to get more links and traffic the their site.

If your market is not in the blogging for business world, then you can still have the widget and hold a monthly contest where you pick 3 of the top commentators and give them something for free. If what you’re offering is valuable to your blog readers, then they’ll start commenting on every post you make for a chance to win.

Simple Tip #3 – Ask a Question

This is almost as easy as the first tip. Simply asking your readers a question will increase the amount of leads you get. Think about it.. if a visitor read your entire post and got to the bottom of your article, they’re just looking for a reason to let you know what they think about your content.

So ask them a question and that will be their reason to comment.

Simple Tip #4 – Interact with EVERYONE

You’re already reading every comment you get, right? Now all you have to do is reply to everyone who took the time to respond. This creates a much deeper connection between you and your blog visitors – and because of this connection they’ll be more likely to become loyal readers who comment all the time.

Extra tip – Create a list and ask for additions..

Take this post for example. I created a list of the 4 simplest ways to increase comments and I’m asking for any additional tips. This will encourage more reader to contribute to the conversation.

Your turn.. How do you get your readers to comment?  Share your thoughts and any other simple ways to increase comments in the comments section below – and please share this post with your twitter followers and facebook friends.. thanks!

Hi
This is basic to get comments but this kind of comment are worthless if you are asking. You must provide values with your post and the comments comes really has a value and it mean a lot.

Thanks For Sharing

I completely agree Abhishek, but I also don’t like to assume that my readers are going to comment just because the value is there..

Asking them to share their thoughts does increase the response..

Hey Hector,

Great to see you on technshare!

Awesome tips. I just added a top commentators plug in yesterday, feel free to stop by and show up on the list ;)

I practice each piece of advice but intend to ask for comments more frequently and end posts with questions. When you ask, you usually receive answers.

Sometimes your post topic can help too. If you take one side of a debate that is slightly controversial, you can surely expect people to chime in with the counter arguments.

Perhaps you can even combine a controversial post with the “asking”, For instance: “There is more to this story than what I have written, please let me know your take on it…”

Well now I have to comment Hector! LOL!.

Seriously though, I think simply asking is the key, but not directly!
The way you did it here is the perfect recipe for engagement if you ask me. You are asking for comments by engaging the reader in the process. THAT is the key I think.

I am about to publish Wednesdays post and it’s all about using comments to get traffic – so will tie in well with this one.

Great minds think alike brother! (or is that fools never differ>?)

:)

Reply

Hector Cuevas September 7, 2010 at 5:29 am

LOL.. Let’s stick to the former..

..and you’re right, what I meant by asking is to simply find a way to engage your readers so they can leave you their thoughts..

thanks for your comment

Well, as far as comment is concern, what you had just said, is what most of the time when I post something new, asking them question and giving something valuable for top commentator such as a link back to their blog.
Another way, is to use intense debate comment system when you others can rate other people’s comment just like digg-like site, the higher the comment rating for that particular commentator, the blog owner can reward him something valuable.
I’m not sure is there are plugin that can do comment rating, maybe someone here might know, if so, it will be great if you tell me and other commentator in here who doesn’t know…
And thanks for sharing your four ultra ways for more comment….

Writing valuable articles and encouraging opinions or suggestions to readers can also get you a good flow of comments. Of course, do not shut the door when it comes to criticism or negative comments as these also give you some things to think about with what you wrote. Nice post, thanks for sharing.
